My v8 soarer has a clunking noise at the rear, underbody area. Can be heard when going over speed humps even at say 5km's. Nothing seems to be loose, that's been checked. I was thinking it mite have something to do with the control arm bushes? Can anyone help! My poor babies sick again!

Aimee.

It sounds like bushes, but may just be the sway bar bushes which is a cheap and easy job.

Possibly getting a shocker test at your local Peddars might be useful to locate it more precisely.

Hi and welcome Aimee. When you say it's been checked for loose things, sometimes the obvious is left out. How about a broken muffler support or spare wheel not held down properly or a loose jack? Lots of things you could check.

Thanks mike,
but i have taken everything out of the boot inclueding the tyre & tools.
I have also had the car looked at by several mechanics, & had it up on a hoist ect.
No one can seem to diagnose the problem. This is why i suspect the problem to be the bushes
or internal.
And although i dont, it sounds like i have a diff in the back!
The car is also having overheating problems, i think it's the cats.
Silly question, i know, but why dose my car have 3cats? Is'nt it just overkill!

Thanks peter, i'll look into what you've suggested.
Thanks again.

Not sure what you mean by that statement as you have got a diff in the back.
The extra cat is fitted when the car is complied upon landing in Australia. Overkill? Definitely.

Could be the Diff, it is only when you go over bumps?
Control arm Bushes or Sway bar bushes (rubber so they won't be loose, just old and crap)

Could also be low tyre pressure as well.

Have you had aftermarket wheels put on recently? If you have could be them contributing to a poor ride.

Possibly a shock absorber if you have airbag suspension.

Ahh how true, I forgot about that.
Yeah, one or both of your airbags could be stuffed. You can't get just the shocks can you? I think you have to get a whole new unit. I'll be forking out for a brand new set or all four at the end of the year. They aren't cheap.

Try the bushes first. Just get them all done (they'll need it, they always do), it's a lot cheaper than new airbags. If that doesn't fix it you've still done something that needed to be done, and then work from there.

Is it a "Pop" or a "Clunk"?

The airbag is the spring and shock absorber in one.

Generally if it's bad, your ass drags along the road.

Hi Brett,

Please don’t say shock absorber, I just had one replaced.
Was heaps $$$
Yes, mine are air shocks.

Thanks guys for your input, will follow up on suggestions given.

O’ what I meant about the diff is, it sounds like a non standard one.
Sorry I’m probably not explaining things to well.

I'd guess bushes... Most common thing. If not that then it has to be shocks.

How does a Diff sound like a non standard one?

Aimee, for the Pedders shocker test, they put each wheel on a vibrating plate to measure how well the shocker damps bumps, it also shows up noises pretty well, which hopefully they can then locate for you. :-)

Hi Ashley, although we are getting off track & I may not be explaining things correctly,
Here go’s this is the last time I’ll try to explain what I mean about the diff.
I previously owned a Nissan 180sx that had a non standard diff or say high performance one in it,
That rattled & thumped & was very noisy at all times.
This is what my soarer sounds like now.
& I know it’s not meant to!
Thanks for your suggestions.

Peter,
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
Will follow your advice & hopefully get some definitive answers.
Hope things with your car, are well.

It's possible it's diff noise but unless you've been doing a heap of phat skiddies around the place it's unlikely you've killed it.

The Standard open spinner is noiseless though, so it could be dead or dying, might be worth swinging it by a diff place to see what they say.

when i brought my soarer, it had a clunk in the rear end as well. it turned out to be a bolt that held a like a link to the sway bar. it had never been tightened and clunked out of where is was supposed to be and onto the thread. i can post a picture of the exact part if you like.

Hi Amiee.

This is the culprit here. The bolt was never done up properly and therefore the swaybar moved back and forth on the uni joint bolt. I've circled the one that gave me trouble.
If it is the problem, you'll also hear a small tinking noise every now and then while the windows are down.

Hope you fix the problem soon!

Sorry about the quality of the pics too...

My rear left sway bar link has died - it makes a noise like throwing a coin in a mug when going over an uneven surface. Has anyone got a part number for both rears? I'd prefer the authentic Toyota part, but will take a 3rd party replacement if I have to.

Is this easy to replace? I have the rear sway bar bushes on order so I'll probably do the lot together.
