Guys my 91 V8 is drinking too much (5km/L), my best bet are the O2 sensors, well I was thinking I would replace them anyway as they would be quite old by now. I wanted to know (I searched and couldnt find some of these info):

1. Are they easy to take off and install? How?
2. Where should I get them from? I know they are the single wire ones. Any brand? (cost-80-90 bucks each I presume?)
3. Part number?
4. If I cant do it myself, should I take it to a mechanic or autoelectrician? How much could I be set back to take out and install the new ones?

There is at least two different types for the V8's a single wire and a 3 or 4 wire (I can not remember). I think you can tell just by looking under the bonnet, but somebody else would have to post up a picture of where to look. I think Toyota charge the same for either type but non-OEM single wires are significantly cheaper.

yep early ones were single wire then they changed to 3 (4?) wire in '94 i think

So he's going to want a single wire one

Generic ACA single wire sensors are $60 each.

You'll have to cut the plug off your old one and connect it to the new generic sensor.

Thanks guys. I gave the local mechanic a visit today. He reconed that if indeed the O2 sensor was the culprit, the engine managemnt light would most likely have gone off (is this the case?), so he thought O2 sensor was unlikely, but then again he said he had never worked on a soarer V8 before and wasnt sure where the sensors were etc. He thought best thing might be to do a diagnostic through the 2 ports (He didnt have the factory reference numbers for soarer V8 diagnostics, but he will try to chase them up). Is diagnostics the best way to go about it? He thought it could be anything from air filters to fuel piping to injectors to carburetors etc etc.

I called up Supercheap, Autobarn, Sprint- they said they did not have Soarer O2 sensors listed. Toyota quoted me $200 for each (discounted from $242 apparently because I mentioned I was Soarer Central member). Thanks guys once again, I will call them again tomorrow with the ACA part number.

I still have no idea where they are under the bonnet. I would rather do them myself if I can.

Not sure if you need to take off the under tray then looking from underneath just behind the cross member you should see it screwed into the down pipes either side.

Is this it?

If it is, MASSIVE thanks to Dave for the instructions. The damn thing (the metal collar bit I am thinking) is welded right on the exhaust pipes! I am hoping its not the O2 sensor, cause if it is, dont know how much pain its gona cause to get them off.

I think the one you show, Tahmid, is the Cat temperature sensor. As Neils' pic shows it's further back towards the engine.

Thanks Neil, Dave, thats a great pic you have there for me Neil! I chased up O2 sensors further, and Bosch Part no. 0258986501 (Around $52 from Sprints)seems to be an equivalent for ACA OX201 (Around $79 from Supercheap). So thinking I will grab one of the 2.

Installed the O2 sensors today. Thought I would share some pics:

Upload

Best way to approach I thought was through the front wheel arches.Got the wheels off, after jacking the car on stands. Pic shows left side. Green= The O2 sensor cylinder. Blue= Plug (unplugged) Red= Socket. Its a bit fidly to move the wrench (22mm) to undo the sensor, not heaps of room. The plug is just a conventional one, press and pull.

Upload

Pics of the ones I replaced- genuine Toyota ones. I didnt bother testing them as they look
tired anyway. The cord has to be cut to connect the new sensor with the factory plug.

Upload

Installed these bosch ones- universal single wire- they are equivalent to ACA OX201.

I am hoping this would solve the increased fuel consumption problem.

Thanks Dave. The car feels to be quicker off the mark, but I think could be just a placebo?

Mike, price was $51.55 each from Sprints Auto Parts. I think they were discounted due to Fathers Day sale. Supercheap would have them at around $84 including locating + freight.

Did you just solder the wires together or crimp them?

The sensor wire comes with a crimp inlet. just crimped them and covered them with the wire cover that was already there with the OEM sensor wire.
