Yeah it could be shims. From what I understand with them though is the sound should get softer as it warms up (metal expanding and closing gaps)
So the plan is to take it to toyota, if that doesn't get me anywhere then get under on the weekend and have a poke around. Compression test then start yanking plugs to see if it stops when a piston stops firing. Failing that I'll see if any of the cams have strange wearing.
If that doesn't help then I guess it's back to the drawing board, or ditch the engine and get a new one... or wait until this one blows.

Ash, I just watched your video and it doesn't really tell much, I wish we could listen to it just idling for a bit. I'm sure there is an issue there as you are noticing it, but the video is not giving much away.
I have used Castrol Magnatec (every 5000 Km without fail) for the last three years and its been great. As an example, I just finished a 5000 Km round trip to Sydney on Tuesday and its still running fantastic, great economy (for a 1685 Kg UZZ32 that is).

I don't know about you Jeff but those oil specs sound horribly thick.
Now I haven't driven up North but I have driven in 35 plus deg temps. I did a 1600km trip all driven on the HWY at 100km/hr, the weather was 30 plus the entire time.
I was using 5W40 at the time and had zero oil usage. I change after this point when I found out what the toyota specs were.
Using such a thick oil will not allow oil to flow where it is required ie through oil galleries and inbetween bearing clearances. My understanding is that this will do serious damage if it has not already.

Well some guru will correct me, but the most wear is done at start up. If you have a too thin oil it will not be cushioning the main bearings well enough and the crank will touch the bearing material.
This will kill your engine.
Just use the weight oil Toyota recommends, they make the best engines around and are the most reliable... I reckon they know the right weight to use.

Nice to see how this has turned into an oil debate... my 2c is just use 10w40 or 15w50 depending on what your comfortable with. It doesn't seem to matter what you use as long as you change it every 5000kms with a new oil filter! My car uses very, very little oil.
In actual fact all engines should be using a little according to my Toyota handbook. If it's not there could be something wrong somewhere.
On another note I took my car back to Toyota to get them to have another look at it. They are adamant that it's just the injectors echoing through the headers. They tested it at cold start, there is no knock and basically I can deal with it or but a new set of injectors because they are not confident that cleaning them will do anything.
