I've just gotten back from having my valve clearances adjusted from Toyota and I'm unhappy to report that there is still a fair bit of ticking in the engine.

Actually come to think of it I don't think getting them adjusted really did much of anything. So I have a question: What else could it be?

Sound coming from both sides of the engine. especially noticeable after the headers and around the passenger side injector rail. I know it's not the injectors as I can hear them running separately.

Is it possible for the intake gaskets to cause a tick if they go?

Well I was running 15W up until the weekend and when I changed over to 10W it didn't make nay difference to the sound. So me thinks it might be something that doesn't coat itself with oil if changing the weight doesn't do anything.

Oh and I'll also note that the sounds is worst underneath the car. Weird yes, but you'll notice it in the video.

Yeah I think the injectors are OK... it's the rest of the noise that I don't like.

Car feels smoother now the valve clearance is done it's just a shame that the noise didn't go... so unsightly...

You mean you cant?

You see Gary it's because my V8 is just that damn fast I'm actually traveling as fast and the sound so I can see it. You wouldn't know with your slow TT... HAHA

It sure is noisy. You could be right Gary it may be an exhaust leak. Does it run warmer than 1/2 on the temp gauge Ashley?

Exhaust gasket is possible. I'll have to do some serious exploring on the weekend. I've just ordered a Mechanic's Stethoscope... hopefully that can help me track it down. Finger crossed is shows up on Friday.

But you're car is the awesome Gary. You'll have to take me for a spin and show me the shift kit at the meet.

HAHAHA Yeah it's even more so when it's under load. I can hardly hear the ticking over the exhaust, just at idle. Nope... only for about 4 seconds at traffic lights on a warm day before the fan kicks in and keeps it cool.

I'm also going to add that the ticking noise actually gets louder when the car gets hotter. Yes, that's right the colder the car the less it ticks, even to the point where it doesn't tick at all on a cold morning... strange I know.

So I'm going to to check my gaskets on the weekend, compression test to see if there's any engine wear, get under and tighten a few things up around the gear box etd and have a good listen to see what the hell could be going wrong.

Fingers crossed it's just a leaky gasket or something simple to fix.

Toyota recommend 5W30, 10W40 shouldn't be a problem but certainly no need to go thicker.

Perhaps they used the incorrect shims or didn't replace all that was required and this is only masked by thicker oil when cold.

I haven't watched your video yet as I'm at work. Have you listened to the charcoal canister? That can make a fair bit of a ticking noise, sometimes more than lifter noise in my engine.

It's coming from under or at the rear of the engine...

Spoke to them about this. Also noise is the same as it was before the shims were done. I doubt it but I'm taking it back for them to have a listen.

Unfortunately No...

All I got was the invoice showing 4 replaced shims as well at the PCV valve and rocker cover gaskets.

I'm taking it back to Toyota tomorrow afternoon so there head mechanic can have a look and I'll take him for a drive.

Could be piston slap I suppose... but I'm doubtful to suspect that. If it turns out to be incurable I guess it will be new engine time!

Thats no good. My ticking is similar, on a cold morning there will be almost none at all, then as it heats up its audable but mine is coming from the front top of the engine so probably is shims or at least not the same issue as yours.
