Kind of defeats the purpose of better air flow though doesn't it?

Not at all - the holes in the drain filters are very large and don't restrict air flow much at all (tried this out with a 2000 watt vac to see how much difference in suction it made - virtually none), plus they have the bonus of reducing intake noise by quite a bit (if thats what you want)

I wouldn't recommend this setup for a TT of course, but I think for a N/A car its fine - and certainly provides enough air for my little 3 litre - much better than the snorkle anyway.

It would be easy enough to cut out the bottoms of the filters like you do with the egg cups. Main reason I went with these is they were the right size and you can get them from pretty much any hardware store for about a dollar each.

I have BFI 3 in my V8, but I did not mind this idea at all because one of the drawbacks of the egg cups is you have to turn them back to front, hiding the nice stainless steel finish (yes I know the lid hides them anyway).

I noticed on Saturday stainless steel sink strainers in Coles for 92 cents each and using Matts method you retain the nice S/S finish, particularly if you are not in a hurry to put a lid on it.

Perhaps we could call it BFI 2.5

Why did you turn the egg cups back to front, Robert? They should (under the lid) display even nicer rim shapes than the sink strainers. Personally I would grind the bottoms off the strainers as well.

What I meant, is when the egg cups are glued in what you can see is actually the underside of the egg cups. See below:

Yes, I quite agree you could grind the bottoms off the strainers too.

Yeah, but its not dedicated to sucking air in. A basic 2kw vac produces a lot more sucking power than a 170kw 2JZ-GE's intake system at full roar.
