I have had an annoying high pitched occassional squeek from the front of the engine and it seems to be coming from the belt tensioner.

Upload

The tensioner wobbles a bit when the engine is going so I am not sure if the spring is on its way out. I would like to strip it down and also replace the bearing on the pulley - confirm its just three nuts to undo and it will separate from the block? There wouldn't be any seals behind it that could be damaged in the process?

Anybody ever done any work on the tensioner?

Hi Barry. Be sure your problem is with the tensioner as it is a mongrel to remove. No, there is no gasket behind it, but on my 95' the plastic guard covers touch the flange of the tensioner and prevent it from being removed.
If you need another tensioner, I have one to sell at $50.00. It does not include the pulley.

Perhaps I should start with replacing the bearing if its a mission to get the whole tensioner off. Can you remove the pulley without taking off the whole tensioner? Do you need to some how hold the pulley to loosen its bolt?

No Barry you don't have to hold the pulley to remove it. Make sure you turn it in a clockwise direction to remove the nut as it is a left handed thread.

Mine squeaks, Its the spring and what not inside. The pulley bearing has been replaced but the unit does need to be replaced maybe due to the squeek..

Is there a way to open it right up to get inside or something?

It looks like my squeek is also the spring...

take the belt of and drive it a sort distance to confirm it really is the tensioner.i had a squeak that 3 mechanics said was the tensioner and had a new one on order,it actually turned out to be 2 dead engine mounts!

My tensioner made the same noise - I removed the tensioner and put as much grease in it as I could - from memory there is a small opening somewhere - hasn't made a noise since - 3 years now I think - some grease will leak out - if you are a clean engine type of owner you will need to wipe off the excess that leaks out. I did try various types of oil - none worked for long.
Sorry I can't give more details - it was a while ago.

Yeah Ive thought about doing this Greg, Probably will on a nice sunny day soon.

But I do have to remove the cooling pipes fiddle down in that tight space with a wrench, remembering this is a celsior so the gap compared to a soarer is much reduced. Done it before but keen to load it up with a nice suitable grease - Probably allow a couple of hours.

Would be nice to buy a new one but I was quoted by Toyota for $600 however I might check again as that could have been the wrong part. :-)
