I have been reading that it is not uncommon for ecus to malfunctions. What kind of tell tale signs are noticeable of this, what are the reasons of this. Is it just that easy to pull the ecu and inspect it for deformations or a lot more involved

Common problems are dry joints and leaky caps. You can see them usually, but it's an expensive risk if you're not too sure what you're doing.

Peter ECU issue can cause all sorts of problems.

Poor fuel economy, no low down go, very sluggish and restricted, rough idle and sometimes stalling are usually the first signs.

This can also result in AFM error codes even when the AFM is working fine, fuel pump issues including not turning on, engine idle very low, engine cutting out, engine running really really rich and not revving passed 3000rpm even under light load.

If you have to ask, usually the best idea is to give it to someone who knows

Sorry my question should have been
"Who do I send this to that can fix it?"

As far as I know, Damian is doing them. Other than that there's probably a few places in SA that specialise in that kind of work.

Pen would probably have a better idea of local talent.

Dry Solder joints can happen to any electrical equipment. Older BMW's can have the same problem as can any car that runs a computer.

Just seems that the older your cars is the more likely it is to have a problem.

I'd love to know what Damian is charging and if he's offering some kind of exchange program or something.
