hey guys, I've got a 92 v8 and it goes fair well for its age as I'm sure everyone knows. seeing as my mate just upgraded to a 400kw supra and i'm kinda getting used to the pull in the soarer, i was wondering if people could advise whether its worth to work the v8 engine or maybe do a swap to a 2jz? cheers!

Hello Andrey. What has been done to the car already? If you want more power then breathing is the answer. Increase that of the engine while strangling your wallet. Search BFI and exhaust, then ECU and supercharger.

If you want to match your mates supra, then you will have to go 2JZ, or spend tens of thousands on your V8. Best bet would be to sell the UZZ3x and buy a JZZ30, then drop a 2JZ into it. Of course, you first should ask yourself, do you really need 400kw? And if so, why?

400kw is not really worth it. What you need it torque. Convert to BFI II (no cost), New headers and exhaust (about $1000 at the right place) and get a piggyback CPU ($1350 for a Unichip) and you would have raised the KW bar by about 50% and gotten about 50% more useable power via the torque, all for about $3K or less. You will never need (or indeed want) to drive a Supra again (except in the rare occasions where you're on speed).

50% is a little imaginative.

400kw Supra must be a lag monster just race him from 0-60km/hr that way you'll beat him all day every day plus no-one will lose their licence!

20-30% is comfortably there though, and the driveability goes up dramatically as Benny says.

Careful with that claim... I'm pushing nearly 400kW through my 2JZ and still get boost at 2000rpm. No lag there |

yea 400kw isn't really my aim, how much can a v8 be pushed without any kind of supercharge or turbocharge though? I've seen some dyno's at around 200 rwkw, is that the max kind've power i can expect from a v8?

200rwkw is a lot to ask from a N/A soarer V8, I haven't seen many go over the 180rwkw mark without supercharging. A lot of internal work would have to be done to make over 200rwkw. Big dollars.

Yeah you're right, 50% is a bit over the mark, it's more like around 50rwkw (for mine anyway). It's actually the driveability that makes the big difference, not the power.

Yeah but doesn't an F1 engine only put out like 200 ftlb peak torque?

Simon I call your bluff you show me your 400kw supra that makes boost by 2000rpm. I saw your car on ignition and it wasn't making positive pressure by 2000rpm that's for sure and I didn't think your were making 400kw either unless of course you're talking fly wheel kw but in that case that doesn't count because the only power that counts is that at the wheels! Andrey I'd save up and get a supercharger kit for your 8 you'll be extremely happy with the power and response Who cares if your mates car beats you anyhow build your car for you not anyone else and you'll never lose!

The 1UZ-FE was always designed to be a touring engine, not a racer (hence the "F" - narrow valve angle set up for economy, not power)

Hahaha Matthew, I get 6-7 km/l in my V8. |

Well, obviously with your mods economy is gonna suffer =) My UZZ30 got around 10.5 on the open road, which isn't too bad for a 1991 4 litre V8 hauling 1650 kg's around. Couldn't call it economic, but for a small V8 its still pretty good.

2003 4.0 V6 Falcons get roughly the same economy as our V8 Soarers. I know what I'd rather be driving! If you want to shred a Supra in both acceleration and handling, spend $10,000 on a Suzuki GSX-R1000. 116kw at 170kg dry - gives it nearly 1hp per kilogram... which would give the Millennium Falcon's Class 0.5 hyperdrive a run for it's money!

I always thought the 2003 4.0 Fowl-can was an inline 6 and not a V6

Oo - you got me. Dang. I'm always thinking about half a sentence ahead of what I'm typing - sometimes happens when I'm yakking too. I said something so stupid the other day because it all came out wrong... in front of 240 people in a lecture theatre. I'm glad I gave them all a laugh... same with you guys!
