Just replaced the radiator on my V8. I had another coolant leak and my car started to over heat, so I shut the engine down and coasted to a stop at 2am this morning. I tried to restart the engine but it won't and still will not start the next day AT ALL - just turns over - no sign of life. Very strange as there is no real major loss of fluid or anything obvious. Had to have it towed home. I checked the fuses under the bonnet and all seem well. Coil packs replaced recently - if it were one then half the engine would start. It must have something to do with the engine getting hot. Any ideas?

Not unless the coolant has saturated something to do with the electrics. Can you test to see if you are getting a spark? Hold a spark plug lead close to some metal on the engine, or use an old spark plug in it.

The engine turns over somewhat slowly. It doesn't sound too good to be honest. Like it has no compression. Could be imagining that. You see the engine was fine until I saw the temperature rise, so to stop it over heating I just switched it off and coasted about a mile before I found somewhere to stop. From then on it wouldn't start and still doesn't start. Where is the ECU or the Igniters?

This is a long shot....maybe your water pump locked up ? belt off or snapped? just check your camshafts are turning ....???..how hot did it get on the gauge.

thats what i would have thought. mabey the battery isn't giving enough power to start the car and run the computer??? ie, flat battery. I know its a problem with commodores.. only they go click and don't wind over at all.

Dave.. i recon if 5 or 6 cylinders with valves closed (which would be the case) you would a have a compression stroke every stroke? hard work for the starter. as i said its a long shot, hope its not the case

I have found the problem - my cam belt has broken. Hopefully its 'just' a cam belt change. Strange how it broke when I switched it off. Must be a coincidence. Thanks for the pointers chaps!

That does not sound too good.
The water pump might as well be replaced at the same time since it is a belt off job too and may just have been the reason for the belt failure if it had seized (?).

Water pump will be seized. Probably crapped out the bearing and ran super hot. After you turned it off, the bearing and shaft solidified. Next time you hit the starter, belt snapped.

Jake sorry to hear its bust , they seem to go as you take your foot off the gas ...your belt was red hot and starting to melt as the pump was locked ...only use Toyota red coolant when you get it all together again..DR
