I was hoping all the gurus here could shed some light on my cars health...
It took a while to start up this morning, then didn't sound too good. Normally I get a great note out of the exhaust, but it sounded really flat. Its idle is low and rough, sounds like something is slipping- and it smells like a lawnmower. I turned it off and instead of the shutdown burble, it just stopped.

diconnect a coil and see what happens. Same thing happened to me. Top coil went.
When you disconnect one and the motor doesnt change the tune you know whats up. The petrol smell is a giveaway to. If you need a coil to test with Ive got my old working one (i replaced both). You would need to pick it up though I have a broken diff atm.

The majorly loud squeel didn't concern anyone? Guage lost RPM completely there at one stage too...
I'm no mechanic, but that squeel sounded somewhat ominous. Timing belt? Drive belt? Seazing pully?
Anyways, mine doesn't have that noise, and didn't when I lost a coil either.
Not saying it's definately not a coil, maybe there are 2 issues there.
Has it had a timing belt? If yes: Was it just the belt or a kit? I don't know if the following could be possible, but if one of the pullys for the timing belt seazed could that not affect ignition firing an create a squeeling noise such as that one? Kit only cost me like $120 or something when I did mine at 100,000.
Just saying, to me, that noise would be someone concerning also. But I'm no mechanic. I've heard they're non-inferance motors so you should be safe anyway, personally I didn't trust that though

It was towed to the mechanics yesterday and i'm gonna shoot down there now before he starts work.
That was the first time I've heard the sound, and in terms of timing belts- wouldn't have a clue when it was last replaced- although Doug said it was fine in January.
Haha, its comforting to know that it could be anything... Last time my crumpledoor had a faulty coil, it went back to the mechanic 4 times for leads, harmonic balancer, plugs and 2 sets of coils- $700 and two weeks later it was still playing up.
Mind you, some sort of timing/ignition problem makes sense. Before it packed up, I was getting very inconsistent acceleration, particularly down low where is would seriously bog down.

Left side coils is what he's said. $250 job finished. Parts didn't arrive today so the install is tomorrow. He said he tried to get toyota parts, but they quoted $350 and a 6 week wait.
Just a side question, was the 1uz engine in any Australian delivered model? I heard somewhere that the Landcruiser did.

Crazy person with the spanners....
It's missing worse than before.
I'll be replacing plugs first, tracking down some NGK Iridium BKR6EIX-11 at the moment. If that doesn't work I'll get onto the old set of coils, and some leads.

Yes I know, that's why it at my house, not in his workshop waiting for more parts.
Oh, but I'm forgetting about the 20L of fuel he put into it... better have been OPtimax, or rocket fuel...
The most disturbing thing is he's written on the line for the coils:
1 Ignition Coil Toyota Import $227.27 $22.73GST $250.00
He said to me on the phone, "yeah its a beautiful car, but the trouble is everything is gonna be expensive coz its an import..." and which point I said, "How much do I owe you, don't order any more parts- I'm coming to pick it up."

The thing is, if the guy is a d-bag, he probably doesn't have any good suppliers. So probably gets stuff from like toyota, then adds his own mark up.
That's where I'm lucky, my mechanic happens to be my sister's boyfriend, and his supplier happens to be his brother. MUH HAHAHAH!
Often stuff for imports can be expensive, especially soarers from what i've found, as the seem to be less popular among modifiers and what not. So cheap taiwan made parts are probably not manufactured as much.
But yeah, i'd pull out the plugs and check to make sure all are firing first and go from there. Oh and what of that squeeling?

Hmmm, odd. You don't happen to have a pod filter do you?
I know that seems like an odd question, but i just went out and recorded my engine, it's making a very similar sound on the recording, yet nothing that i can hear. lol, epic fail
