hi

can anyone tell me if the ls400 and sc400 have same alternators. I need an alternator for my sc400, which is hard to get but ls400 i can get easily a lot cheaper.

I know alot of parts are interchangeable between these cars as long as the model is of the same years (ie 94 on is different and 98 on etc etc)

i read somewhere the ls400 is 100amp and the 91-94 soarer is 120 amp (100amp for sc400 after 94). Also when i got a new battery i bought an ls400 spec cus they didn't list soarer which was 100amp. would this cause a problem of overcharging on my car? and could this be cause of my power dieing out rather than my alternator being faulty? if so seeing as though i got an 100map battery if the ls400 alternator does fit would this be a better choice?

and by the way my power steering is not leaking, although my pump does make a funny sound. no signs of fluid anywhere.

cheers, urgent help required as im stranded 120 miles from home right now.

Aleem, the battery won't be the problem.

I don't know if the alternators are interchangeable, but have you considered getting yours overhauled? At least that way you know that it's good for many more years.

I had a very similar thought about the alternator giving problems because of the incorrect battery size. When I bought my soarer it came with a rediculously tiny little battery (I would guess about 55A). Absolutely incorrect - but I could start the car without any problems for the first 5,000.00km - then I got the dreaded catalyst overheating heating light first thing in the mornings when starting the car - and of course that was my alternator finnished. I too suspected that the incorrect size battery had caused the problem as I couldn't see where any fluid had leaked onto it - and I had never had to top up my power steering.

The alternators should be interchangable though the amperage rating might be slightly different however that shouldn't be a problem.

All the 1UZ's I have seen have the same alternator mounting and the plugs are all the same as well.

Having a too small battery will not cause any problems once the car is running, the battery isn't really used once the car is running as the alternator is supplying all the current that the car needs.

Alternator's do wear out and are very cheap to rebuild. If the regulator is fine which it should be then all you are looking at is a set of brushes and two bearings. About $30 worth of parts.

Matt.

Worst case if the plug was different you could swap it from the donor car.

my alternator died on my celsior and just got it replaced, and found that the stuffed alternator which was in their was from a 1jzgte (so that could also be an idea?), same plug and everything, took that out and put another one in from a celsior no problems.

lextreme also do new replacement alternators for the 1uz pretty cheap which i think are like 140amp or something

edit - and yes ls400 and sc400 should be interchangable
