Hey guys, need some advice regarding the steering rack in my 91 UZ31. I've already done a search, couldn't find anything of use. Since I bought the car it has had a "dead zone" on the steering where there is little to no response on the wheel. When turning the wheel feels overly light through this point and doesn't turn the car much, THEN the wheel seems to regain control and feels normal. When driving on a straight road, any small bump causes the car to 'drift' around the place which is pretty scary sometimes. I assumed it was the bushes so I just had them replaced, but the guy at the workshop said the problem is still there. Anybody else had this kind of problem before? Any ideas how much a 2nd hand steering rack is going to set me back? (assuming this is the only course of action) Cheers.

Cheers for the reply mate. I took it to a suspension workshop to get the LCA and steering rack bushes replaced (with VFT bushes) and figured the problem would be solved by doing that. I've noticed the car definitely handles better but the drifting problem still happens at times. The guys at the shop reckon the rack needs either swapping out or reconditioning.

Hahaha this place is the home of the car related double entendre. Funnily enough, one of my rear tyres was absolutely screwed, with a big tear across the sidewall. But I'm pretty sure the problem lies in the steering rack as it only drifts around when the wheel is in that 'dead zone' position.

Chris, it wasn't much. I bought a new bolt as the thread had been a bit shaved from the movement, and they fitted it and re-aligned it.
It made a noticeable difference too.
Ben, I would still get the car to a suspension proctologist for a check, the $14 Pedders safety inspection would be good. It's pretty comprehensive. http://www.pedders.com.au/
