Yes, the kit is available from Toyota, approximately $50. Also buy a new bearing which isn't part of the kit, bearing places can help, or get the mechanic to get it for you.

If the pump is already leaking, it will ruin your alternator very quickly.

For work I don't do myself, I go to Steve Kramp at Manta Automotive.

Thank you! Its not that the pump is leaking its that at low speeds the steering wheel gets hard to turn a mechanic friend tells me its a spring in side it that needs replacing.

Its worth a try (its an o-ring btw).
You could have just gone to your local autoparts store and picked up a generic o-ring.

Sorry to hijack your thread Chris, but my power steering pump is on it's way out and i've been quoted $550 for a rebuild at Sports and Luxury. Does this price sound about right?

Also, it's been whining for about a month now. Roughly how long till it starts leaking? Is there anything i can do to delay it?

Cheers, back to you Chris.

For drive in/drive out it seems on the high end, but not outright ridiculous.

Say 5hrs to do the job @ $75/hr = $375, $60 for the kit, $20 for new fluid.

I'd expect somewhere closer to $400 for a drive in/out job.
Unless its at a Toyota/Lexus dealership, then $550 seems normal...

If its whining, and the fluid level is fine, then there isn't anything you can do.
If the fluid level is low, topping it up may stop the whine.
My Celsior has just started whining when its cold, but doesn't when warm, fluid level has always been fine.

Not many places charge 75 an hour any more, more like 100.
I did a rebuild on mine a few months ago and I think that it took around 2-3 hours and half a carton of beer for inspiration. I think that a qualified mechanic should be able to rebuild it in less than 5 hours. It's not that complicated from what I can remember.

Chris, Niall used to do pumps in sydney but he now sends them away, his reasons were: lack of time, and secondly that he states that the place that recon's them for him did a better job than he could. So without having direct experience i would be guessing it would be better to have it reconed by someone who has a good deal of experience.
