I'm thinking of getting my exhaust changed soon. I'm pretty sure i've got the stock cats in place. Got quoted just over $2k for the whole lot (front to back). or just $550 for the cat back + $180 for the tips. Are these prices a bit high? Is it worth doing the full exhaust as they also said the cat backs would really only be for sound. They would make much extra power at all.. They said they would go from cats, down into 1 single cat, then back out to dual pipes, hotdogs, into lukey straight throughs. What do i have to worry about legally? Any tips would be appreciated. Cheers Chris

I had an improvement on that system.
2 x cats high flow 1 x dual inlet dual outlet muffler in middle 2 x lukey straight throughs
no crossover or hot dogs needed and 3 mufflers
similar to the pic below with only 1 middle muffler, thats what i want on my 32 one day, if i can fit the dual rears would be good but have to find correct offset muffler.

Its probably better to get higher flowing cats.
The old ones by now are probably stuffed, slowing the car.
When doing the V8 exhaust, Ive been temped to get it done from the Cats on my stock Soarer...... but I've done it before and the results are average, you really need to get headers other wise I think your wasting your time. Which is what I'm planning on doing when I have some cash freed up

full system is ideal, but in reality its usually a $3k+ exercise, especially if you get the engine mounts done at the same time (recommended as you save on about 5hrs labour and they usually need doing at that stage). Headers and rear mufflers are the 2 biggest restrictions in the factory system iirc.
Make sure you get an X pipe for scavenging, V8s have an uneven firing order.

Will that effect power at all? or only sound?
yep, general agreement is it adds at least 10hp throughout the rev range.
Because most v8's fire unevenly, meaning it will fire the same bank twice and the other not (sometimes, not all through the firing order), there will be lower pressure in the other pipe while there is higher in the other. Putting a X pipe in will allow the high pressure side to go into the low pressure one. And that, is scavenging.
Sound wise it will also be different, 2 seperate pipes will have the old school burble sound, an X pipe system will have a more modern V8 sound, bit of a higher pitch and slightly quieter.

Over the years I've read a bit of controversy over the X pipes... some tests show theres no benefits between one or not while other tend to.
I really think it comes down to personal preference.
For me I'm not a fan of the sound the X pipe gives... I prefer the 2 separate pipes, but may think about an H pipe for when I do my Soarers system, I love the older style sound...

Yeah, the way I look at is after Peter N mentioned to me (I recall) is just get the basics done first as you can always add in a X or H pipe later...
I'm thinking about getting flanges made up so I can interchange the join on the exhaust from straight pipe not joining, to an X and an H for different weekends. Hehe..
I guess the trick is to get a genuine X pipe if I do, as the cheaper made up ones don't work well. (EG the kiss 'x' pipes.)

went in there today and they reckoned $800 for catback system with 2 hotdogs, 2 lukey's, and 2 tips. $900 if they put a x-over in. or one of the new pacemaker H-pipes.. Might go without the x-over and see how it goes..

Chris, where are you getting quotes from. I'm also looking at doing my exhaust and have contacted AAA, Exhaust Technologies and Fisher Performance (best price thus far). Would be interested to know who you've spoken with.

I'm going through AAA. Booked it in for 16th.. They do mandrel bends etc, so all nice and tidy Maybe why it costs a little more. But AAA are meant to be the best, so.. hrmm.. Supposedly i already have the factory cat's removed and aftermarket ones in there.. Care to share your prices? yours a V8 as well?
