Hi, one more thing I am about due for a service had it since APril this year and not had a thing done, other than new fue and oil filter change. The toyota dealer guy said theres not much you can do to a Soarer because its all run by ECU, is this right? Other than spark plugs, coolant change if needed and so forth. Does anyone know some more about this topic??

Also I am going to attempt a blinky dash problem that I have soon, but will this also fix my unstable (speed) odometer reading?

Here is a list of stuff that I have done/replaced on my V8 Soarer.

Thermostat
Antifreeze
Brakefluid
Trans fluid and filter
Engine oil and filter
Diff fluid

Spark plugs
Distributor rotor x2
Distributor cap x2
Plug leads

Engine mounts x2
Trans mount

Front upper arm bushes
Front lower arm bushes
Steering rack bushes
Front and rear shocks

These aren't all service items but are things that will definitely need to be done by 160k's if they haven't already been done.

Matt.

Candice, depending on where you're based you could take it to Adelaide Exclusive Mechanical on Magill Rd in Trinity Gardens (near the McD's). I have mine serviced there and they are bloody good.

Wow thanks Andrew, thats very Interesting! I wonder if I should go for the good spark plugs $80 ones? Would they last longer or perform better? I think I need new bushes so thats more money...woohoo NOT.

Plug leads are so expensive, how do I know if I need new ones of those? Will the mechanic be able to tell...(silly Q).

Using a multimeter, the resistance of the leads can be checked. The lower the resistance the better.

The more expensive plugs will last longer.

If they are the original leads they will have the year of manufacture on them (ie 1992, 1994 etc).

The resistance of leads is actually pretty high and will be higher for the longer ones. What you would test for, is open circuit. The high resistance is to reduce electrical interference from the leads affecting other things, eg radio, ECU etc.

Peter is correct, the resistance itself will generally be quoted as a value over length but the actual value doesn't matter that much.

When testing the leads remove them and holding a meter lead to each end rotate the ends around to check for intermittent open circuits.

OMG this all too much...not But nah the toyota people are dumb! i dont know why I took it to them to fix. they quote ridiculous prices. $220 for new spark plugs and $3,000 for new bushes...can u believe it. i even paid them $50 to check if fuel consumption could be fixed or made more efficient. All I wanted to do was get it services, thinking that would make it more fuel efficient. How wrong was i....omg

i will take it to Adelaide Exclusive Mechanical I reckon. Anyone else know of good mechanic to change bushes for only $200 or so?

While your around that way Candice (Adelaide Exclusive), Sam's Auto Electrical is a bit further up Magill Rd, he could check out your stereo issues I'm sure.

One way to get better fuel efficiency is to get an aftermarket exhaust, one that lets the car breathe better.

But that depends whether there is actually a problem.

Do you have accurate fuel consumption figures?

How hard do you drive it?

Yeh I don't think I could get any better exhaust from my Soarer than with the two valves it has now!! Right?

I have just filled the tank up for a whopping $102.50 (with voucher @ only $1.44 a litre. Its the first time I have actually filler him all the way UP. So I went to the ECU and the Fuel monitor system says I can get 480km with the full tank....
that's pretty good right? It works out to be about 15 litres to every 100km.

For city only driving yes, thats about normal, maybe a bit heavy.

Pure highway should net 10-11L/100km

OK SO I have a query that if my speedo odometer is out of whack and not reading accurately. Would this then affect everything else in regards to overall KMs done and the trip computer settings for fuel consumption???

The toyota mechanic seemed to think so but I donT KNOW about THAT, i always liked to think my 89,000 reading was correct.

Don't get toyota to do any work on your car, they have nfi what they are doing with soarers.

If you need any parts, drop me a line, I have a trade account with jarvis toyota and get stuff at max trade discount prices. Also have contacts for aftermarket brakes and bushes at waaaaaaaay less than what you were quoted!

The Odometer reading may be out due to having been "adjusted" when it was imported. That doesn't mean the speedo is inaccurate though.

Most Soarers read a bit faster than they are actually going, eg the speedo may read 63kph when the car is actually doing 60kph.

No Peter, my speedo reads way out of whack! something definitely wrong with it. I am driving at steady pace and it goes from 50-70-45-43 never stays at the same speed. Which is why they(Toyota mechanic) said the odometer may be wrong.

Ben that's great news thank you,my car needs new bushes (not sure which ones though) so when you get some in let me know please. Awesome Job.

Keep the ideas coming guys!! and girls!!!

Well I'm taking my soarer to Adelaide Exclusive Mechanical on tuesday morning... gonna get them to check a few things before I commit them to any work..

For bushes everyone seems to recommend the Vlamos bushes and they're a LOT cheaper than $3000 lol

Sounds like a faulty speed sensor at the gearbox. Not hard to replace, but you need to get under the car.

WOW what a heads up.
I have been am planning a flying trip to Adelaide in late October and am now convinced that I should soarer all the way and have a major maintenance overhaul by a mechanic who knows. But at 3000km I should do all the servicing before I leave. But it is a very tempting road trip.

I did Gold Coast to Adelaide in January in a 31, great trip, the wife and I both enjoyed it immensely. The V8's are such great cruisers!

Just change the oil and check the usual stuff - tyres, brakes, hoses, fluids, and you should be fine.

Thanks Peter,
I'll do all the checks and wait to have a knowledgeable Adelaide mechanic go though everything else first, because I think it's going to be a bit too tempting and financially scary being so close to so much accessible Soarer bits and parts.
My wife and I spent 3 weeks in Adelaide in May 07 and decided that we might relocate there.
A fabulous city, unbelievable food with easy rural accessibility: Australia's most livable city we thought and we have lived in most of them.

Just my 2c here. Leads can be sought for circa $200 (see Neil from Rush imports).

Vlamos bushes are good (very nice ride), but in my case they didn't last too long. I got the LCA bushes and they needed replacing after about 3-4 years (Uppers were fine).
