Hey guys so heres the story, My car had all the symtoms of dead coil packs so replaced both coilpack but still ran like crap.. Drove it to the mechanics(15min drive) and the found the problem to be one of the rotors had gone so they replaced both rotors and put in new leads aswell.. Now the car has a really lumpy idle and still sounds like crap but seems to have alot more power but the engine feels like it is miss firing and vibrates and jerks around when driving at 2-3k rpm.. any ideas what it could be?? im scarred of taking it back toi the mechanics as the rotors and leads cost me $900 all up

$900 for leads and rotors??

If you paid that much I'd be taking it back and telling them to fix it!

It Could be an ECU issue or they could have installed the leads in the wrong order..

A leadset is around 350 and a pair of rotors is about 100, I wouldn't think it would cost 450 to diagnose and install.

Worth taking it back to them and mentioning that you don't want anything more spent on it but it isn't fixed.

It may be that the ECU has gone wonky due to dried capacitors etc. Do you know another UZZ31 owner that you can test swap the ECU with?

I got my leads for $200 which included postage to my door. Took me about 2 hours to replace them all.

Where from? I need to get leads and I've yet to come across prices under $300.

I was thinking it may be the ecu as i have very high or very low idle depends on its mood at the time.. plus i have noticed i cannot drive with O/D on as it makes the whole car vibrate.. I have tried to reset the ecu but still same problem.. I dont have access to a friends ECU though i will give it back to them on monday

also i have tried disconnecting the AFM and that brings the idle back down and seems to get rid of the misfire and from reading somewhere else this is an ecu related problem

OK so i have fixed the idle problem by removing the idle control valve now its idling perfectly but still missing and sounding sick.. I am thinking its the spark plugs but i will take it to the mechanics on Monday to check the leads and plugs..

Started car and ran perfectly idled normal and no sign if weird firing or miss firing.. drove into town and ran amazing for change on the way back dropped it into second and gave it a boot, As soon as a stopped it was all back again.. Rough and high idle and jerky under load... Arghh this is frustrating

Ok so fitted new ECU thanks to Lew and it hasn't helped.. readjusted the TPS as the mechanic had played around with it after the install of new rotors and leads and this got the idle back down to noram. Lew has told me that the bucking and lerching is caused by the TPS being wrong and to fine tune till i get a smooth run. At idle i am noticing a small misfire the only thing left to change is the spark plugs..

How exactly did you adjust the TPS?

Just by moving it, or with a multimeter?

Best bet is to get a multimeter out and make sure the IDL contact is set correctly.
The ecu needs this to go into IDLE mode.

If its set incorrectly she'll either never go into IDLE mode, or she may go into IDLE mode when you are using very little throttle.

Unplug the AFM and go for a drive.
If it runs fine, then there is a good chance the AFM is on the fritz.

If its no different, its unlikely the AFM.

Did the dizzy cap get replaced?

If the rotor was buggered, the cap needs replacing. They are a pair.

Failing that, I'd check the firing order is right, and failing that I'd put a timing light on EACH ignition lead to make sure they are all firing.

After you sort out that the basic mechanicals are right, Then start looking for complicated stuff like sensors and electronic doodads.
