As per the title, I recently installed new leads (I highly recommend getting new leads - almost all of them were stuffed, a definite improvement)and while my car is now running sweet as performance wise, the car seems to have developed a definite ticking noise that it is only evident under load and changes with engine speed.

When I reassembled the intake resonator (big plastic black tube) I noticed a small split in the plastic where the metal clamp connects it to the throttle body - could this sort of thing result in my ticking noise as vacuum increases?

Are you sure all the leads are properly fitted. Sounds to me like there could be a bit of arcing going on.

Can you localise the noise a bit more?
Try putting some tape over the split?

Hmm arcing huh? It does sound like that, but it only happens on WOT (or close to). If i leave it in gear and let the revs climb without excessive throttle then the noise is barely audible, but as soon as I plant my foot it come back - wouldn't an arcing sound being present all the time - irrelevant of a change in vacuum?

Peter the noise sounds as if it's coming from the actual throttle body - but it's hard say. I might try that trick with a wooden pole to try and localise the noise.

Using a piece of garden hose might work better, as you don't have to actually touch the noisy part to hear it. But try taping the split too, might be the simplest answer. :-)

Good idea, thanks Pen.

Yes I'll get the tape out and give it a go. Not sure if it will be this weekend though as there is a certain footy game on telly and many beers to be drunk..

As far as arcing is concerned, you could take a look under the bonnet in the dark with the engine running to see if there is any sparking.

Definitely seal the intake leak, that will be causing unmetered air to enter the system and could cause the motor to lean out.

It's unlikely you will see the arcing as the leads are mostly covered over.

The arcing might only occur under load as the spark requirement without load is much reduced.

Best bet is to take it back to where the work was done and ask them to remedy the fault.

Matt.

Yes good point Matt, didn't think of that. The crack was only a few mm's and i figured the clamp would seal it, but you're right it could lean out and that is bad indeed..

I'd take it back and complain to the mechanic who did the work but he's busy typing this reply.. :-)

Haha.

I doubt it will lean out as the 1UZ's run quite rich from what I have seen but it's worth sealing the intake completely.

I think for the arcing sound you will have to pull the covers and see if you can see or hear it better.

Got pics of your RX2? Love them!

Pics of the RX2 - yep sure have. It's actually in the shop getting all sorted at the moment. It was defected many moons ago and has sat under my car port for ages. Finally getting the motor sorted, brakes fully rebuilt (has 4 pot volvos) and then i'm getting the body sorted and resprayed, so in a few months it should be sweet. Has 13b EP, lightened flywheel, 4.44 diff, full exhaust but I'm going to keep it as original as possible (no roll cages or recaros etc..)

It's an original series 1 Rx2 coupe - I'm told there are only 4 left in the state.

Guys this noise has just been diagnosed as an exhaust leak. (Just happened to begin right after I fitted the leads).

Apparently the nut that holds the front right extractor to the head was totally missing! It's been replaced but there is still a leak and a bit of noise so I suspect that the gasket has been blown out. Got the extractors fitted around 18 moths ago and exhaust shop says 2 year warranty so we'll see what happens..
