trying to cut a long story short: I finally fitted a set of sti leads to correct a misfire, only to find the misfire is worse. Nial warned me many times about fitting aftermarket leads telling me it is a waste of time in general but other people seem to do ok with them, Now im starting to wonder if its something other than the leads. it generally only happens under load and actually feels more like umm hesitation, like with fuel starvation..the revs go up and down as i accelerate. Dont really want to spend 350-400 on another set of leads if it turns out not to be the issue. Anyone got any ideas? Maybe it was the way they were fitted?
thanks in advance

Coil, distributor caps, fuel filter, air filter... just to name a few.

Not yet thanks john. Nial reckons that is the aftermarket leads as i said but i dunno...you'd think that the new ones would help a bit. His offsider reckons that it could be the plugs but they are genuine and less than a year old...he said something about e10 fuel.. all sounds a bit weird. I mentioned that the distributor caps was mentioned but he reckons no. I dont think its the fuel filter as it is always missing at a certain rev range and speed. Thanks for your help will let you know how it works out.

I doubt it's the STI leads Ben , I have been running and selling them for about two years with absolutely no probs at all , so far have had about 20 set's go through my hands with not one comeback mind you if this problem only occurred after having the leads fitted then you need to check if they were installed correctly , also if you needed leads then you should have done rotor's and caps at the same time , not that I'm saying they might be your problem , just that it makes sense from a time perspective , you are already in there and for an extra $50.00 or so it would be worth it .
I think I would be having a close look at the coils , you are probably due to replace them anyway , I myself have two coils coming from the States as I want to do preventative maintenance not reactive maintenance !!
buy one new coil and do a swaperamo to see if that's the problem .
Same applies to the fuel pump , you haven'
t said what year or mileage your car is/has but the fuel pump is at least 15 years old !!
If it fails it's a tow job and it really is something that should be replaced anyway .
Let us all know how you get on .

By the way, Charlie has a good price on the coils. Check out the for sale section. He's in Bankstown from memory.

thanks guys. im pretty hopeful its not the leads Rich. It doesnt seem like it is and i certainly wont be casting aspersions until i get the matter resolved. Coils...hmm maybe thanks for the heads up on that. The car is at 260 000 genuine kms. I dont think it is fuel supply issues as i can throttle as much as i want after it is going 80kms/hour doesnt skip a beat. its only when travelling 70-75kms and the revs are low, or when taking off at full throttle. As much as i like Nial and his help in a number of areas his advice is often a little different from other respected members of the site..hmm. will let you know how it goes, thanks Rich, and John.

Thanks guys, turned out to be a combination of top coil and air flow meter. Leads were ok in fact i reckon i'll be giving the STI leads the thumbs up when i pick it up tuesday. Will let you know how goes Rich, but i got a good feeling.
