Hello everybody!

Tonight I opened the hood and almost had a heart attack.
It was steam (smells like steam) from the radiator area. The part of inside surface of hood was wet and it was liquid (looks like rusty water) almost everywhere around the radiator. I added water to coolant and fan tanks.
Let it get cooled. Start the engine, - the same steam from the bottom of radiator and looks like under battery. What is it? Is it safe to drive?

Thanks a lot!

Have you ever had the top radiator tank replaced? They need replacing after 120k or so.

Seeing as your bottom tank is probably cracked might be better to just get a new radiator.

You could try Just Alloy radiators i think they have some alum ones for about 400-500. shop around though. good luck man.

Thanks! It is a bad news...
I have 89.000 km, so did not think to change radiator. I guess, radiator from SC400 should fit?
Anybody can confirm that?

Thanks!

It's probably the top tank that has cracked, at least that is the most common, and water wouldn't get to the battery tray from the bottom tank.

You should be able to get the top tank replaced.

Thanks to all!

What is strange for me that coolant is still there and I can see level.

What I am thinking if it cracked all coolant should be gone during last two days, right?

Not if the crack is in the top tank, though you will lose some.

Until you get it fixed, try driving with the radiator cap just on the first stop. That way pressure buildup may escape past the cap rather then squirting fluid out. This is NOT a substitute for getting it fixed though.

Go to a radiator shop, they should be able to tell you the exact problem very quickly.

Thanks, Peter!

Strange thing is some days I have no issue at all and some days the same picture, - splashes under the hood and steam is coming out...

Going to do power flush, change rad cap. It is on the extensible plastic tank, right?

Cheers,

If there is coolant in the system, it can usually show where the leak is coming from.
