Hi all
The low engine oil message appeared on my dash the other day but I have no idea what oil I should be using. Can someone please help?

On a similar issue I have always had a slight ticking coming from the engine. With my old car as soon as I topped up the transmission oil the problem stopped. But the trans fluid in my soarer is full and I can't work out the noise. Is this a common problem?

I run Castrol semi synthetic.

The ticking noise might be because it's low on oil. I wouldn't be driving it until I knew how much oil it had in it.

I have done 10k km's in my Soarer and it now has 170k on it and it has never used oil.

Matt.

The ticking noise could be coming from the carbon canister.
It is located on the firewall LH side.

This has been covered so many fricken times but, I'll be nice :-)

I used Penrite fluids. HPR10 in the winter 5 litres worth and HPR15 in the summer.

Its the best oil from my experience and what others say about it.

Trick is to change it every 5,000k's though and use decent filters. :-)

Search for more info.

Andrew you'll probably find that everyone here is pretty 'chilaxed' unless you use words like 'chilax' that is. Id recommend you acquaint yourself with the use of the dipstick and actually check the amount and condition of the oil before worrying about which type. The ticking could be shims and may disappear if you change the oil. If the engine is critically low on oil it can blow smoke on startup, that is a few days before you need to buy a new one.

^ Yup!

It is a little 'off' to think of the fact your only worried about the oil now that the light has come on, If my light came on (which it never would) I would be highly alarmed as that would mean either 3 things, one the oil has not been changed in years or for many thousands of K's, two you have a really bad leak/burn problem or three there is a sensor problem...

The indication of tapping clearly means theres low oil and the remaining oil is not doing its job, get it changed asap - your engines heads aren't being lubricated adequately

I've just bought my soarer and having rarely driven it I havn't had the chance to check the levels. I have aquainted myself with the use of a dipstick, how else would i know that the oil was low? Once I knew the oil was low I wanted to know what was best.

I ended up buying Notul 10-40, expensive but supposed to be one of the best so see how it goes.
thanks for everyones help

From what i've been reading... it's not so much using the best that's important, but changing it regularly.. every 5000k's here..not that i've done another 5000 yet..

An ex-Lexus mechanic recommended and used an AMSOIL 5W30 synthetic that is apparently good for up to 25000 miles. He recommends changing after 20,000km, but isn't that pushing it in a 16 year old car? I like the idea of 5W for easier starts during winter storage, but unsure of going anything over 8000km without changing the oil and filter...

Any thoughts on this?

I run my TT on Royal Purple 5W30 synthetic, they make similar mileage claims between changes, but recommend a filter change every 3000 miles or 5000 klms. BTW the 5 grade is for hot running, the 30 grade is for cold starts.

I would recommend you, Steven to ask directly oil manufacturer tech support.
I did it for Shell diesel oil and was told change every 5,000 km.
You can read here:

Good luck!

John......Sorry mate you are Not quite right there regards Oil weights...The 5 is for cold starting and the 30 is for when it is hot..Don't worry a lot of people think that way regards hot and cold oils..and only tend to think of Viscosity and not actual weight..Sort of like what is denser Milk or cream..??What floats is the less dense...
Personally use Mobil 1 5/40 Syn Oil and Pura Filters and havn't had a prob..and it is Hot up here...Again change it regularly.....5,000 klm's or 1 month after putting it in ...
