G'Day,
I havent posted in a while since I have had a trouble free soarer for 12 months.
On the way home today, I started getting the red warning light and blinking cat light or "check engine" light on the dash.
It doesnt stay on, it just blinks under hard acceleration and then goes away. I thought I heard a backfire on the freeway and now I am guessing it was me.
Should I be safe to keep driving it? What should I be looking out for?
thanks guys.

Sounds like the first warning that the P/S pump is leaking into the alternator.

Indeed, definitely first signs that alternator is on its way out.

Thanks for the pre-warning. I guess I had better look at getting a new alternator soon. Do I have any other option?

Definitely time to check for leaks on your power steering pump which causes the alternator to blow.

Another budget way to help would be to make a cover of sorts for the alternator so the power steering fluid doesn't get onto it.

Better sort it asap because you will soon lose your alternator if you keep driving...

Once again, you guys are spot on.
I noticed a minor leak on the PS pump and this morning the battery was just about dead. I have pulled it out and put it on charge so that I can drive to the mechanic in the morning.
Hopefully it wont be too painful a fix. If I had the time I would do the PS pump overhaul myself, but I guess thats what you pay the experts for.

Just an update on costs, which is the most common question when this happens.
power steering pump rebuild $305.
Alternator rebuild $330.
