guys,
i need help, i've been driving around, everything was normal until the car started to stutter like a cylinder was not firing plus rough idle then heavy white smoke coming from the exhaust. and very high fuel consumption, 10L in just a few minutes of driving.. what could be the problem guys? there is a japanese warning message saying i have an engine electrical problem, i tried to get the code by jumpering the diagnostic port but only the O/D light keeps on blinking steadily without any pattern. I have a japanese soarer. i really need help urgent since i am not in my home town. i couldn't drive home like this. thanks guys.

been switching the coils to spare ones and they seem to be ok.. i think the injectors are clogged up. could this be the cause? ill be popping them out tomorrow to clean them.. i hope this is the cause..

disconnect the battery for one minute and see if that does anything.
It could be anything from: Bad fuel, dead plugs, crimped leads, d!cky sensors to the distributor. Run some 98Octane + fuel additive in it and see how it goes.

i have a similar problem too. had a rough idle which was fixed with new leads but i do have white smoke coming out my exhaust and the distinct smell of unburnt fuel, which goes away once the car warms right up and is driven. anyone got any ideas?
Cheers
would like to add its running V power and has just had spitfire run through it (was happening before running the spitfire through it)

i have just had the plugs and leads replaced could possibly be a ECU problem apparently but i am not sure how to go about testing that without spending a large sum of money on a gut feeling

Is there a loss of power? Is it running like it is on less than all cylinders. Does the cat overheat (or is it check engine) light come on? Find a couple of coil packs to swap over for a test. Or borrow one coil pack and test one at a time on your car.

well i cant tell for certain about loss of power as only just got the car and don't really drive it much but it seems to run a bit better when the car is cold, from what i have seen the cat isn't glowing, no errors come up, previous owner has changed coil packs and spark plugs and i have changed the leads

If a coil pack was the issue you would know the loss of power. The car is pretty much un-drivable. It will struggle to get up hills, especially if you have to stop and start on a hill.

it will occasionally struggle up hills not to an un-drivable degree just one particular hill it puts out the same power as my Suzuki swift (1.3L carby)so i may still look into the coil packs.

thanks Damian, i have had new spark plugs and leads put in and a receipt from where the coil packs have been changed recently (have not had the car that long) is it possible that the ECU has learnt to put more fuel into the cylinders as it had been running with stuffed leads for god knows how long and was causing a cough in the engine

thanks rob, will do mate. would that also explain it running great cold (other then high fuel consumption) and loosing performance once it has warmed up? feels like it will only go half as hard once its warmed up

It could definitely change your fuel economy as well as bring up the Electrical error as well as run very rough. If you unplug the MAF sensor with the engine running and it does not stall or idles smoothly when disconnected it is very likely its stuffed.

The white smoke is a sign that you could have power steer fluid going into your engine , I think that the Soarer has the P/S speed up valve on the side of the pump just like the Celsiors , if so it almost certain that's where the white smoke is coming from , the "O" ring in the valve wears and then with engine vacuum on the other side it sucks the P/S fluid straight into the engine . It's a device that really isn't needed so just remove the valve , weld up the end and put it back , problem sorted for all time .
