All newer cars have knock sensor. If you put low octane or even plus ulp which is 10% ethanol you car will sense that and back off the timing so it doesn't ping. This means any fuel will do no damage but efficiency is a different thing all together. Old school cars would just ping.

At the V8 supercar weekends they have 2 cars set up to run fuel in seperate banks. In a holden and ford and both are set up the same, 4 cylinders run on unleaded BP fuel and the other 4 cylinders run on BP ultimate fuel. It has cameras set up inside to show how it runs and it shows the high octane burns alot cleaner. In hind sight that will give less carbon and keep oil cleaner and reduce wear on your engine. I have use it for years and find i have gain about 30 kms extra per 60 litre tank and never had a injector problem. Car doesnt ping on it either. Try it for ya self and see how your car goes on it. Shell high octane is good but I like BP better.
