Hi guys this is my first question, I have just bought a 4.0 V8 Lexus/Soarer and have noticed the engine is a bit noisier than it should be, from what ive searched on the net it must be the tapping sound from the shims that sit on top of the valves gently tapping against the cam, apparently only a paper thin gap can cause this, it can be heard inside the car at about 2,500 rpm when it echoes against a passing fence etc. my question is what will this cost to fix and will it cause any damage if i dont do it soon? Also does it require new shims or an adjustment? the car still performs fine and the tapping/ticking cant be heard when putting the power down at all. Any advice would be excellent!

Justin, you will find theres no real damage caused by this apart from making your car sound horrible.
Basically you will have to measure all the clearances between your cam lobes and the shims when the shafts are rotated in the correct position. A workshop manual goes through all this easy enough.
If any which in your case some will be, you will find the clearances are too big causing the sound. Cylinder number 7 could be a likely candidate to need a couple new shims as well as others.
You need to work out what size the shim should be and buy the appropriate shim from Toyota that will be the correct size.
Quite a tedious job but easy enough, once you get to it.
Basically the job involves taking the cam covers off, using a couple of special Tools from Toyota to push the valve bucket down, hold it and remove the shim, you can also take the cam shafts out completely to do it but not really necessary unless you want to do more work like replace valve stem seals which would most likely be worn if your cars tapping.

It has done 180,000kms, but had a lady owner since imported to Australia at 90,000kms, when i go for a drive, the sound is ticky under gentle acceleration, almost like the sound of an exhaust leak from the engine. I stress to anyone in Adelaide SA where is the best place to get this fixed, because i have only had the car for 5 days and im worried I made a bad choice.

My UZZ30 used to tap away merrily. I never worried about it - did 70,000km like that without a problem. Mind you you couldn't really hear it from the cabin, only when standing near the engine.
