Please excuse me if this is a very basic question but I have not had a car with catalyst converters before...
I have read in another thread that the 'ticking' sound of catalysts after switching off the car could mean that the coils are on their way out. My catalysts tick away for quite some time after switching off the engine. Is this not normal?

The catalytic converter gets very hot to try burn off all those nasty pollutants, so it may be normal thermal heating and cooling (expansion/contraction) but it could also be indicative of a cat on it's way out which could in turn damage your mufflers. You can try and feel the exhaust to see if little bits of crap are coming out on your hand, which could indicate time for a new cat.
