My understanding is:
1. longer life of headers (esp mild steel) 2. Keeps heat out of engine bay and away from components like steering and brake master cylinder. (heat proof coatings) 3. By keeping heat inside headers, speeds up exhaust gas flow, which can help with scavenging design headers.
I will get the track car dumps coated once I get around to buying some.
