hi, i own a 91 active soarer. The other week my car was hard to start. For the next 3 days it was fine and then it did it again. Finnaly it did it last tuesday morning and wouldn't start at all,it sounded like it was missing. A mechanic looked at it and said there was no compression in all 4 cylinders on the drivers side, he said i could be the camshafts. I took the cam covers off and the camshafts appeared to be intact but the oil around them was extremely thick. Could it be something electrical due to the intermitant starts or some mechanical.}}

Pretty unlikely to get no compression in all 4 cylinders on one bank - that would imply that every cylinder has a major problem with the gasket, valves or pistons. Of course if the oil is turning to tar, thats possible I guess. When was the last time you changed it?

Compression is a mechanical fault and it's nearly impossible for that to be intermittent.

I would get another mechanic to check it out and give you a proper diagnosis. It's unusual for an entire bank to have no compression, a blown headgasket doesn't usually affect all cylinders in one bank and cam or cambelt problems would generally affect both sides.

Given that it doesn't start at all any more it's either electrical which would explain the intermittent issue or something like the cambelt.

Matt.

It had being going through a lot of coolant lately and the temp gauge would sometime go past half-way but i did coolantflush and replaced the thermostat 2 months ago. It seemed only not to start in the morning when the engine is cold and is at least lubrication. Can i try turning the engine over by the camshaft or do i have to do it via the crank.

Sounds a lot like a headgasket problem.

have had problems in the past when the compression gauge was not seating in the thread properly and not reading correctly

Tried to turn the engine over via crankshaft bolt and only got about 1/4 turn and then felt like something was stopping it from turning further. I noticed on the drivers side, front of the engine exhaust valves are not moving. Its seems like the spring on them has collapsed, when the cam was turning those valves didnt move.

Sounds like bent valves.

I have read the early 1uz is supposed to be non interference perhaps that isn't correct???

The thing is the timing isnt out and wasnt out at the time it didnt start, wouldnt the timing have to be out for valves to bend.

SOunds like it might have hydro locked and bent a valve or two which is causing the compression problem.

but would that explain no compression in all 4 cylinders, like that is just weird. Mine is a 1991 model too i thought they were non-interference.

Major head gasket failure with the cylinders filling up with water after the engine was shut off could do it when you tried to restart.

Or a collapsed valve stuck in the port. Happens sometimes - saw it on an episode of "The Garage" recently.

no, the camshaft moves just not the 2 exhaust valves on one cylinder.
