How does 15W 40 oil sound for the v8 in a hot climate?

Myles, way to thick, the 15w60 is just about gear oil thickness I wouldn't put it in any engine.

If you read the info on planet soarer Peter Scott liked 5w40 and later on started using 0w30.

I am using Amsoil 5w40 as it has the same properties when cold as most 5w30 10w30 oils but maintains more viscousity (the same as 10w40 oils) even under extreme load than the 5w30 and 10w30 oils.

Well for the past few months been on Penrite HPR10w50 seems fine plus and I do go up in the hills fair bit . How much is the Amsoil ?

Also is anyone running a full synthetic oil?? any leaks when you swapped to full syn??

Amsoil is full syn, I was running 5w30. No leaks why would there be??????

No oil consumption engine ran perfectly.

15w60 has about 3 times higher viscousity at 40 deg C than factory specified oil, I suspect even worse at lower temps.

I put 20W40 in my Soarer with no problems at all. Doesn't get down to freezing temps here so no issue. 15W60 wouldn't bother me either. I routinely use 20W50 in plenty of motors.

Almost everyone I know says be careful to when going to full Syn as it might cause leaks.

It's around double the viscousity but I go easy after start up and the engine is getting on so I figure I should be safe. More Important to change oil and filter every 5K.

Miles which motors, what are the bearing clearences are what are the recomended factory oil specs.

Myles, full syn causing leaks that is rubbish. Full syn does not cause leaks.

15w60 is much more than double the viscousity compared with the factory recomended weights of 5w30 and 10w30. 15w60 is very close to double the viscousity of magnatec 10w40 which is thicker than factory specs.

a friend with a celsior ran mobile 1 full synthetic but had high oil consumption/leaks (rear main i think) and had to regularly top up the oil. after swithing to shell synthetic technolgy his oil consumption/leaking stopped. For me if you stick to the SAE the engine was developed to run on (usd500m spent in development)sae10-30, you will see max benefit.

Just a thought if you do want to run thicker oil a possible alternative is the mobile 1 5w50.

Only a little thicker when cold but also retains a higher viscousity when hot.

Damian, Factory weights are really just a guide and as long as you stick close to it should be fine. Also my engine is almost 20 years old.

Barely any difference between the Penrite 10w50 and 10w40 Nulon and Magnatec.

Number 1 is regular oil and filter changes.

Penrite is good value because it comes in 5 litre containers, which is just perfect for a 1JZ/2JZ. Occasionally have used it when I haven't been able to get Magnatec at a discount, and no complaints from me.

Yes as most V8 soarers are..

What is much more important is your engine in good condition and has it been maintained.

Yes factory specs are a guide this is why they have a number of oils weight suggested at different temperatures.

HPR 15 ie 15w60 is more than double the viscousty of the factory recommended oil and it is nearly double the viscousity of magnatec 10w40.

Not suitable for a 1uz in my opinion.

As I said above 15w60 is a very thick oil and it is a huge step up thickness wise from 10w40 and even 10w50 weigth oils when cold.

Damian, Your getting caught up on the 15w60 which I only use in summer when its 40+ and last year's heatwave when it was peaking at 46-47c.
