One year after replacing my Radiator, Water pump, Cam belt, Idler Bearing, Tensioner Assembly, Tensioner, Serpetine belt, Distributor caps and Cam seals.....My UZZ31 has begun severely overheating within minutes of start up.

Symptoms:

Heater blowing cool air.

Temp gauge climbing to max and red japanese warning message with "bing".

Overflow bottle coolant steaming then cooling to a bubbling simmer when engine turned off.

Steam streaming from front of motor (passenger side, in line with oil cap approx 20cm down).

Coolant pooling on front cross member (passenger side).

No visible leaks, cracks etc except for small crack in top of overflow bottle.

No coolant in oil.

I have had car towed to workshop, problem diagnosed as welsh plug leak, head gasket or cracked head. Have been advised by mechanic that his understanding is that the timing belt needs to come off to get to welsh plug.

All advice would be appreciated, very short on cash at the moment and need my car on the road ASAP. Is chemi-weld an option?

I would put money on a stuffed thermostat.

Unfortunately I don't see how this could be related to a thermostat problem. :-(

if it is a welsh plug, you will be losing water, and that will cause the overheating. if you have the system full of water and it overheats in a couple of minutes ( like before all the water can leak out) i would go for the thermostat.
undo the large bolt on top of the thermostat and watch to see if water ia getting pumped around after a couple of minutes
if the waterpump is only 1yr old and you have used a good coolant it should be ok

heater blowing cool air would also indicate water is not being pumped (if system has water)

pressurize engine from radiator to check for leaks and most definitely check thermostat

Lack of hot air in a 1UZ often indicates that the coolant level has dropped too low for water to enter the heater elements, usually shortly followed by the engine overheating.
