ok update i just replaced 1 of the coil packs and the engine is running like a v8 again was sounding like a WRX so glad that's over. but its still not quite rite. I think the spark plugs may be fouled or the leads are in the wrong order. would that cause the airbox to make popping sounds ? Jamie what do you mean change the vac hose ? Cheers mick

if you drove it for a while with a stuffed coil, you may have stuffed the cats. what were you doing prior to it running like did you change leads/plugs?

when i bout the car it already had all the problems the new coil pack improved the car a lot but its mainly when i give it a bit of foot it stuffs around ive already hollowed out the cat cos it was seriously melted. Im thinking of getting new leads and plugs but I wanna make sure the current leads are in the right order before i go spend heaps of money. Just dont really understand how to do it

Hey Keenan was yours backfiring through the air box when you rev it? its actually popps so good that it lifts the lid on the airbox. i hate a friend over yesterday he seems to think that its the fuel pump but im open to any ideas. Please help. Cheers Mick

michael, check the spark leads as per the link above (ie each lead from the disti to each plug is correct) make sure the firing order is correct before going elsewhere.

Hey Tom I checked the leads yesterday they are all in the correct order. the engine doesnt seem to be misfiring or vibrating it runs quite smooth at idle. bad things only happen when i give it a bit of foot. it goes alright till about 1500rpms then it bogs down and makes the popping noises. but it doesnt do it all the time sometimes it revs fine for a minute then it stuffs up im running out of ideas very quickly. Im pretty good around motors but the 1uzfe isnt the easiest engine to work on. I did a diagnostic on it yesterday and it said ECT OK, EFI NG but it never gave me a code . Just went to EFI_ _ . Once it going ill be an expert at these cars hahaha.

Michael, if you get EFI NG with no codes it may be that your engine ECU is playing up. Check the electrolytic capacitors in the ECU, replace if any are leaking, or even if they are'nt, while you've got it out, replace 'em anyway.
If you can swap over a known good ECU this will confirm either way.

hi michael,
have you got some crap fuel in the tank? an old fix is to put some metho in the tank to break down any water and get it thru the system.
also Techtron 5000 from a caltex servo is great.
I think you have done the fuel pump ecu bypass,fp to b+. the ecu mentioned above is the main ecu for the engine. Have you measured the resistance of both coils?

Hey Tom I may have crap in the tank I recently changed the fuel filter and completly emptied the tank through the line so it may have gotten blocked. And yea i did that bypass. Im not to good with electrics How much metho should i put in ? I got about a quarter of a tank of fuel in her at the moment. Does it sound like a dying fuel pump? Cheers Mick
