I know, I know.. it sounds like a stupid question, but I need to know!

When I'm driving along with my window down, I can hear the sound of my car/engine rebounding of surfaces/objects (ie. passing car, curb, barrier etc..) and it sounds sorta, wait for it, 'chainy'?

It's a hard sound to describe. Metal scraping, chainy. There isn't anything obvious that I can see which could be making the sound. My wheels aren't scraping or touching..
Something that I have noticed however, there is a slight ticking coming from the engine bay whilst idling.. not too sure where, and I do apologise for being vague.

Could this be the sound I'm hearing as I drive? If so, what could it indicate..?

hahha.. oh dear.

Could be anything. Do you get any weird noises when parked? Go past a familiar fence and change gears but keeps the speed constant, does the chain noise change?

Star doing some detective work! :-)

No weird noises when parked, apart from the 'tick' that repeats.

I'll do the changing of gears thing tomorrow morning and will get back to you!

Old exhaust, Cats, Headers, old gaskets, tappets, general wear and tear will make this sound.

They are not new cars or engines.

hi karl,

if you are unable to identify the noise, you need to go to someone who can. it may be normal, but it could be major. get assistance to identify the source.

^ Yep what Tom said.

If you're anything like me you are absolutly paranoid abouty the sound of your engine.

Last night I was driving and i heard a tap tap tap .. the alignment got weird and the ride felt bumpy.

Pulled it over and checked her out .. there was tiny stone the side of a 5c peicein the grove of the tyre. None of my passengers noticed anything.

Anyway as Tom said - if you are concerned take it to a Soarer mechanic .. do NOT get a mobile mechanic out no matter how cheap or experienced they claim to be

Probably a shim, but on the 1UZ, ignore it.

Hi Jeff...

I have also heard that a "noisy tappet" is a "happy tappet".

What would be the explanation for this? Surely its not such a good thing...

slightly noisy (loose) doesnt do any damage. Too tight burns out valves.
