hi guys,
I'm in need of a new steering rack, or someone to refurbish/repair my current one as it is leaking all over the place. I've had to post-pone replacing the steering rack bushes.
I've called around and got a price to have it repaired for $600ish.
Is that what I should expect to pay for that? Or could anyone recommend anyone who could do it for a little less $$$?

If thats a drive-in, drive-out job, then it sounds like a very good price. If thats with you removing and replacing the rack yourself, then maybe not so good.
Another option is to find a good second hand rack, of course thats always a gamble.

I've recently had mine reconditioned. It cost me $550 just to have the rack done by some group in Sydney. That was without the labour costs to have Neil Griffiths pull it out, send it off, replace mine with a secondhand temporary, then swap the reconditioned one back in once it was done.
I'm not sure exactly what the labour costs were purely related to the rack change because I had some other work done at the same time.
$600 drive in drive out sounds pretty good if that is what they quoted you.

I guess it depends on your budget and life expectancy of the car. I bought a second hand rack and fitted it to my car and it works a charm. Requires only one special tool besides the usual stuff, that is a 'ball joint splitter or puller.' Honestly, if you got a day on the weekend, you could swap it yourself.
All up it costed ~$160 and a day of labour. $30 for ps fluid, $100 for the rack, and $30 for the puller.

Thanks guys, Speaking to my mechanic he said that we would have to keep the car a few days in his shop (canberra) whilst it was sent to Sydney to get fixed up.

We discovered the leak whilst replacing all the bushes (VFT) and due to the leak they decided not to put the steering rack ones in until it was repaired.
Currently in need of a wheel alignment regardless.
