Well, bit the bullet and cut a big hole into my airbox. Its not quite finished as I run out of time. I need to insulate it, and need to wait another week for plastic places to be open to get parts.
Anyhow, I took the car for a spin and........
It doesn't feel any different, It feels that I need to plant the foot harder to the floor. I couldn't even spin the wheels on the wet roads. It sounds a little better, not as strangled, and it seems to change down more readily, but doesn't feel any quicker (from standing start), still dead until about 3K RPM.
Will sealing it in make all the difference? Its quite cool and wet in Melb this morning, and I have air being directed in from behind the head light using some plastic core flute from a real estate sign.

what i found was, removing the front of the box didnt do alot, what you will find behind the airfilter is a accoustic barrier, it restricts the entry to the intake down to 1.5 to 2 inches, remove this accoustic barrier and it improved performance substantually. Also intake noise is DARN loud now can definately hear the turbos sucking hard haha (TT6 for me)
