Got a strange noise coming from my UZZ31. Sounds like chain dragging........like if you forget to hook up the safety chain on a trailer. Not there all the time, just every now and then. I think it may be airbag suspension related, but I've never heard anything like it before.

You've been too slow getting onto it and as a result you are 'dragging the chain'.
Sorry Rainer, couldn't help myself.
The only thing I could think of is a rear wheel bearing.

Sitting in the drivers seat can you feel it vibrating or is it just a noise.

Onya Mike......no it's not a wheel bearing.

No, no vibration Jayden, just the noise. Probably the same frequency as the compressor kicking in, hence me thinking it's suspension related. Well that, and the fact it's the first air-bag suspension car I've had with a noise I've never come across before....

Yes.

.....don't think so. There's no noise when the car is under load. Cornering or acceleration seem to have no influence at all. Just happens out of the blue every now and then.

Any chance it's related to the accumulator pump?

Do you have any idea which end of the car it's coming from?

I'm not familiar with the accumulator pump Peter. - Is this part of the TRC master cylinder? I'll have to do a search on this.

....sounds like it's coming from the front, though it's really hard for me to tell as I'm completely deaf in my left ear and as such can't tell direction of sound very well. I'm going for a drive with the missus a little later, so we'll see if she can tell.

Rainer, the accumulator provides power assistance to the brakes on TRC systems. It has a pump to keep it charged. The pump runs for a bit when you start the car, then usually runs every 2-3 pushes on the brake pedal.

More information is always good, eg when does the noise happen? If it happens at idle, then it's likely to be under the bonnet, or possibly the fuel pump, as nothing else is moving at the rear.

Hi Guys
Have to agree with Ben to a point on this one, the centre of the tailshaft has a slip joint that should be tightened to prevent backlash and the tailshaft drooping at the spline.
When this comes loose you get a noise like a low key rattle on slowing down or coast, no load type situations and it keeps getting worse.. To fix it just tighten the centre slip joint with biggest set of Stilsons or adjustable spanner you can find.

This might be the issue.

Thanks for that Peter.

Ben / Peter, yes this sounds more likely. Drove around last night for a while with the window down and it seemed to be coming from the centre of the car. I thought at the time it might be an exhaust heat-shield, but I think Ben might be on the money. It only occurs under light or trailing throttle. Never heard it happen under any degree of load. .....have to get it to the workshop and up on the hoist.
Thanks gents

Can you isolate where the noise is, cos i have this at the moment and I am pretty sure it is my cat where a bit of carbon has broken loose.

.....could be Jol. Though it sounds a little different from cars I've heard with broken cats. - Need to get under there and have a look.

Think Jol may be on the right track, bits are in center silencer.Just give the ex a bump under the car you should hear them .
