OK, so i was driving along happily yesterday, when all of a sudden the car lost power entirely for about 1/2 a second, engine coughed/skipped, and back on again. it did this about 5-6 times in a row, ABS flashed on the dash briefly, and then went back to running happily.
Any ideas people?

Can't think that the ABS would be responsible for hesitation. How long since you changed the fuel filter?
Lot of things it could be. Even a dirty battery lead.

My stereo wigs out like that sometimes. just figured it was wiring somewhere or loose fuse?

Looks like a visit to the auto electrician?

Havn't changed the fuel filter since i bought the car, meant to do it when i serviced it last(myself), but ran out of $$$. How long are they meant to last for?car has just (yesterday too) clicked over 160k kms.

Isn't ABS the first thing that comes up when the car runs it's diagnostic check on startup?

How does a not too mechanically minded person check this? i'm guessing by tps you mean throttle position sensor?

Chris, if the fuel filter hasn't been changed since new, it is well over due.

sounds like an earth problems. Read this

http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/51/103160.html?1167967823

I'll also check to see if your battery is any good. if battery dead, then check the alternator 1st before replacing battery.

As your car has hit 160,000km, there is a high chance that the alternator might not be keeping up.

Yeah, definitely a loose connection. The fact that it happened when you skipped over a bump would suggest your battery is moving around and the battery terminals are a bit loose. Could also be a poor earth connection thats cutting in and out.

I would recommend replacing the factory battery terminal connections with after market copper ones - the factory ones are really junky, and a set of solid cast copper ones doesn't cost much.

I'll get onto replacing the fuel filter pronto, especially after seeing that article on dodgy fuel on ACA the other night!
Battery is almost brand new, maybe 4 months old. also replaced the battery clamp and one of the terminal connectors as is just plain crumbled! i'll check the earth connection to see if it's loose or buggered.

Should i just go ahead and replace the fuel filter first and see if that helps, as i don't think it's ever been done?(previous owner did ZERO maintenance until she ran it out of water and then had to spend $3500 on engine work)

Replace the fuel filter because it needs to be done.
But don't expect it to fix the problem.

Think about it, if the filter is unclogged enough to maintain full throttle, then its more than unclogged enough to maintain cruise.
