An unusual rattle noise is coming from under my car under light acceleration. It sounds a lot like a loose washer moving on a bolt. Any hints as to what it might be would greatly be appreciated thanks guys

Its a bit of cat in your exhaust.

Unbolt exhaust from Cat
Tap out.

Please be safe when raising your car!

Actually it could be a few things, obviously check the bolting and make sure everything is secure.

Well my advice.. I am 5'11 and weigh 65 .. i didn't have the strength to turn the nuts to the cat. So i got my 6'4 100 Kilo plus brother to do it. These bolts will have fine rust on them so spray them down with WD40.

Raise the front of the car one side at a time, make sure it is uber secure cos these bolt are hard to get off

Or pay an exhaust place $50 to do it :-)

Well i have the same problem it's proberly a broken ring clamp on your exhaust as the exhuast have covers on them they are bolted on but in acouple of places they have ring clamps and the one up the front is the one that useally brake.Mine did and was rattling and the cover would hang down and scrap on the road when doing 80k's plus.So i put another clamp on it but that broke to so i took off my whole exhuast cover.I RECKON THAT THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM.

i've had a look under the car the clamps are fine and nothing is being dragged, i have it booked in to have the cat taken off and shaken... i have had a good look at all the clamps and made sure everything was secure but thanks for the advice Robert :-)

It could be that the heatshield on the cat has come loose - happened to my UZZ30.

my initial first thought was that too Peter, i have crawled under it and could not find anything loose. i have it booked in for Friday to get sorted as even if i did find the problem i don't really have the tools or the strength behind me to fix it as Jol mentioned the bolts are a bit rusted and me being 5"10 and about 67kg (none of which is muscle) i will keep you guys updated as of then. thanks for the input guys

guys just an update, got my car back from the mechanic there was rocks in my exhaust pipe and the rattle noise is definitely coming from the middle muffler. i'll let it rattle until i have enough for extractors and a catback exhaust system

Just curious David - how could you get stones in your exhaust - especially as far up as the middle muffler?

council have done a really really horrible roadworks job about 4 months ago on the only road out of my place... there is still a large amount of stones on the road, how exactly they got right the way in there is a mystery to me too... knowing my luck drunk people would have piled them in there as i park on the street

Barry, I don't think you can.. end muffler would block them as far as I am aware... sounds awfully sus to me. Still recon it's cat bits if anything. Also .. WTF didn't the mech take them out? It's all Bolt on stuff

yeah the mechanic just said (in his words) "even if i did take the middle muffler off, its not a hollow unit so the chances of me getting whatever is rattling around in there out is next to none"

An update (yes aware its an old thread) Jol was right, had the cat completely die on me now, rattling like nothing else. ohh and Jamie i no longer use that mechanic anymore as they have become useless (i HATE to say that about anyone) but they had charged me for machining the disc's and didn't actually do it

central coast mechanics, in kincumber, as for the cats, i paid $280 each cat and $100 each cat to install. these were high flowing cats. but there was a fair bit of work to be done as the previous owner of my car had butchered my exhaust, the old cats didnt mount up properly and so on
