Okay so heres my problem. the car would idle rough with the rpm needles bouncing up and down from 0-1500 until the car shuts off. Start it up again and same thing happens. This happened to me last month. So I unplugged the maf sensor and it idled a lot better and didn't die. so I drove it with the maf unplugged for a week or so until again my car would shut off on idle or when I'm decelerating(coming to a stop) it also died on me while making a right turn. so I bought a new used maf hooked it up and it ran fine for couple days and problem occurred again. so i did the same thing unplug the maf and guess what it, idles good and doesn't die on me. so i plug the maf sensor back in to see if it would rough idle and die on me. but it doesn't. I'm sure the rough idle will return because the exact same thing happened last time. weird thing is sometimes the car idle's at 1500 rpm at cold start up in park. btw i do have a cel. but when I tried to diagnose it, the cel light wouldn't blink at all. i put the paper clip in ports te1 and e1 with the ac off. and the cel lights just stays on while the o/d off light blinks ever .25 secs.

I changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, cleaned the throttle body, changed oil, changed oil filter, and maf

other symptoms i'm having
before I heard these rattling noise under the car, like small rocks just bouncing underneath the car, maybe in the exhaust or cats?after driving, in the cats you can hear a lot of crackling/rattling noise.
also whenever i hit a small pot hole, or any bumps, it sounds like my exhaust is bouncing and hitting the frame/car(metal to metal sound-clunk) maybe need to replace my bracket.
theres some black stuff at the end of my exhaust
sometimes have a stink smelly fuel smell??

possible problems
ECU
cats
exhaust leak
fuel injectors
anything else?

any one can help please? i rarely drive this car and i might have to let it go for a more reliable car. i hate to let it go because it's just a beauty. if they remade this model I would def buy it again.

May be way out there but i had a toyota cressida a while back come into work that would stink of fuel from time to time and performance would be all over the place as well as sometimes stalling.
It also had a odd rattle every so often.
After a few weeks of pulling hair out we found a torque convertor bolt had come loose and dropped out and was rattling around intermitantly. The knock sensors picked up the rattle even when we did not hear it and the ecu was winding the ignition timing all over the place and dumping a ton of fuel into it to try and stop it from knocking when in actual fact it was the bolt making it think it was knocking.
Chances are the crackling you are hearing from your cats is because they are red hot due to being loaded up with fuel drive it far enough with the symptoms you are describing and they will probably start to glow.

peter-when you say coil packs, do you mean the ignition coils? if so I unplugged one of the wires connecting to the coil on one side and start the car up, it ran, did same thing to other side and car start up as well. must not be the problem.

update:did the diagnostic and got the code 24. weird thing is i replaced my maf sensor a month ago. maybe i bought a faulty used maf sensor? could the wires go bad? because it's mounted on the side of the engine and it looks realy bust up. like the plastic around is cracked.

Check the AFM plug, more specifically the wires going into it. If they're broken or have contact problems you'll get this kind of problem.

You might also want to check the idle stepper motor, I recently had this go on me and the car refused to idle. It would start and if you kept on the gas it would rev fine but as soon as you came off the gas it stalled.

Scott, I have pointed to it in the attached image. Yes the idle air control valve is the part of that motor/assembly that screws up.
