Hey guys,
a few months ago I had a new engine put in my soarer (uzz31) after the timing belt let go. I believe this engine came from a celsior.
After the new engine was put in, I now get an error code on my dash that translates to engine electrical error. Can someone please help me identify what this could be? I never got it with my last engine... There is one thing I can think of - there is one plug in the loom that the mechanic couldn't find where it connected to. It hangs right between the afm and the radiator overflow container. I can get a picture, but any guess what that could be? Or possibly a difference between the 1uz from a celsior and soarer?
One last problem, my soarer idles very rough when cold ad runs rough for about a minute and then it's all good... Any idea?

Hmm... I'm assuming that you kept the wiring harness and swapped it over to your new motor?
That plug that hangs down between the AFM and coolant bottle is probably for the solenoid on your steering rack. IIRC it comes out of the engine harness at about that point...
When you start the car do you get the battery light and 'CHARGE' warning? Check that your alternator is plugged in correctly and that the fat power cable that bolts onto the back isn't touching on any other metal parts.

Rough at cold start could be head gasket issues , sticking injector, coolant sensor or Ecu issue , incorrect heat range on spark plugs or condition of spark plugs , fuel pump ecu .
Try swapping in an ecu and see how it starts .
Must ask , if it was only the timing belt that let go on the old engine, why change the engine ? 1UZ's are non interference engines and simply put a new timing belt on ?

"Timing Belt" I guess you mean the Cam belt?
If so then it is a new engine job as my brother has been there and done that before.
Also if the engine is from a Celsior then wont it be a "front sump" type and Soarer's need a "rear sump" type engine?

Not true. I've fixed up a 1UZ that completely shredded its timing belt (and melted the idler and water pump bearings) while driving on the freeway. Its been running for months now 100% as good as it did before. Got photos to prove it too. :p
EDIT: This was an early model 1UZ in a Soarer. I've been told that the later VVTi versions are interference motors.

Hey guys,
The compression was really bad on the old engine after the timing belt let go (almost nothing on 3-4 cylinders). The sump was taken from the old engine and put on the new one so it would fit in.
Andrew, you may be right about the plug being for the steering rack... As after the new engine went in, my pwoer steering is very stiff and nothing like it used to be...
I do get the CHARGE Message, but only for a second after turning the key and going to accessories and starting the car... The battery light doesn't come up as far as I remember.
I did a diagnostics test on the weekend and came up with "error 22 - coolant temp sensor fault" - so any chance you could show me (possible on a picture) where the coolant temp sensor is located? I have a fair idea but I want to know exactly which one it is before I head to a place to get another one.

Andrew, you're a legend!! I had a look after work yesterday and you were right, that plug connects to the solenoid on the power steering rack! One less problem off my list haha. I have ordered an ACA Coolant Temp Sensor to put in, which I will receive on my lunch break.

Haha, no problems just glad to help.
I could go measure the genuine one i bought if you'd like... the pic looks about right though. The coolant temp sensor is common to most other early 90's Toyotas, you could try your luck on ebay too.
