Hi all,
Well after doing the coils, leads, plugs and now the cats my car will not idle and petrol smell is very strong.

Mobile Mechanic was here for hours trying to find out what it is.
He put n his diagnostic meter but it would not read the car.

Any ideas why the car will not idle and very strong smell of fuel.

Liz,

can you borrow a main engine ECU to try?

It could be in limp home mode, hence the fuel smell. When mine went into l/h mode it used 75 litres of fuel for a 430 km trip, and burnt out the cats with all that fuel going through.
Also idled rough, some times not at all, at least it will eliminate the ECU if nothing changes.

Thanks Peter,

Would that be the main ECU?
I did mention that to my hubby,i suppose a ECU from a TT is not suitable .lol wishful thinking.
I did a diagnostic on the EMV and the only code that came up on the EMV was E1 14, No codes came up on the dash .

Is the code E1 14 anything ?.

Read the flashes:
http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/1113/862.html?1100787369

Could be your AFM isn't working/plugged in. My bet is a bad igniter. Have you checked for spark on each plug?

Liz,

I think E1 is to do with the data link.
Code 14 is to do with no ignition signal to ECU, (or ECU does not compute signal due to fault) and will force ECU into limp mode or fail-safe mode.

Check in the diagnostics page, running V8 diagnostics, it will tell you what the codes mean.

And no a TT ECU won't work, you need V8 ECU toyota part # 89661-24220 with a big 29 in a square.

Jesus how do you get Mark out of my name when you're reading it?

You swap out for another igniter and see what happens. Apart from that you could hook up a scope to the wires coming out of it. If you don't get a regular pulse it's dying. But I'm guessing you don't have access to a good scope. Did you look at the old cats? Were both shot or just one?

Sorry Miles,
Might have been reading another post.

With the new coil installed once the lead is disconnected the car keeps running,i can start the car with the lead off the coil and it will keep going but will not idle, i changed over the leads on the ignitors as stated in another thread but no change.

Only the passenger side cat was shattered the same side i replaced the coil.

The 2 coils, distributors and igniters fire 2 cylinders on each side. There is no ignition component that can take out a whole side. Maybe it's a fuel problem, or even an o2 sensor. Have you tested each spark plug in turn? You could have a dodgy distributor just taking out a couple of cylinders on one side.

I am not sure exactly what you mean by taking leads off coils and the car still runs. Are you talking about the single high voltage lead from the coil to the distributor? Or are you talking about each plug wire? Or something else? I'm not sure what you mean by changing leads on igniters either.

If you have a tachometer you can connect it to the negative side of each coil primary and set to 4 cylinder mode. That will show you if the igniter is firing the coil properly. You can also connect a scope to IGF and watch the failsafe signal the ECU is getting back. If you have an electronic timing light you can just put the probe on each plug wire and see what RPM it reports.

You really need to check those codes. I remember checking mine using the dash. Can't remember if it flashed the light or showed them on the bit where it tells you how much fuel is left...

Thanks miles
I havent tested each spark plug , they are all new and the mechanic said there is no misfire.

Im going to do another diagnostic test when i get home but have put it down to either:

Ignitors.
ECU
Distributer
o2 Sensor.

When i start the car and keep my foot down on the accelerator a little there is a vibration in the steering wheel, just enough to know its there.

Might have to let it sit here until i have the money and take it up to Joe.

I see you have done plugs, coils and leads but did you do the caps and rotors ?? I had a similer problems and eventually traced it to a broken/weak spring in the passenger dizzy cap.it was intermittant at idle (one day ok and the next day crap)
I understand what you were saying about taking each igniter lead of individually (seperate coil packs)as I did the same. I was fortunate enough to have a mate around to swap almost all the electronic components (including the fuel control unit thinking the break down was due to contant running at low flow from the fuel pump causing it to break down at high RPM's)also no codes were seen ..

Hi Vinny,
I havent done the caps and rotors yet, I was just sick of paying out money and it didnt fix the problem.

My car is not idling at all, it was fine until i lost all electrics, when i got the electric back the car will not idle.

Im just going to wait and get joe to look at it.

Thanks

I lost all electrics but found a lead that the mechanic put on the alternator and all electrics came back.
He said he wasnt sure if it was from the alternator as there is now two leads on the electrics.

I dont know.
Still car running crap and still will not idle.
