Hey just wondering what would happen if the radiator top tank was cracked ? would it cause overheating issues ? or would it just leak ?
Cheers

It would just leak. However the leak would then cause over heating issues.

oh ok so if it leaks then the tank doesnt build up enough pressure ? so it overheats?

Air in the system would stop circulation of cold fluid so yes.

there is only one thing that happens with a cracked top tank.

you lose "water', the engine overheats, you F$@@#* the engine.
get a new radiator/ or top tank

It will leak and your engine will overheat. If you plan to keep the car for long time get a Koyo all alloy radiator and never have to worry about top tanks cracking

Having spent a considerable amount of time and frustration on fixing damage caused from a split radiator tank, I highly recommend you fixing it pronto!

It's easy to take out the radiator, do that and drop it off somewhere to get the top tank replaced (shouldn't cost too much) They will also clean it up for you.

us$130 + shipping us$128

total aus$290 delivered to your door. all alloy direct replacement, great looking unit

replacing top tank is ~$350 which makes a new radiator for $290 a bargain. chris ryan in darwin recommended them in earlier posts. I have just fitted one.

That's a good deal! I paid around $200 for new top tank and clean. When I was looking was $500+ for alloy radiator.

Just remember apparently you have to earth it and flush it every year or so to prevent corrosion.

Michael,

the link Tom posted above is a direct replacement for the standard V8 radiator, so it has a top tank, bottom tank, AT cooler bit down the bottom and the normal radiator bit in the middle (as you may have guessed).

The difference is that the top and bottom tanks are alloy, not plastic, so no more cracking (hopefully).
Highly Recommended replacement if you've cracked your plastic top tank. Just take the old radiator out, and replace with new shiny one.

You will still need the plastic filler/bubble tank that the radiator cap goes on.

Hope that helps,
Chris.

is there a radiator that is a replacement for the standard radiator that eliminate the plastic filler/bubble tank?

The top tank is the plastic filler tank I'm guessing, as mine leaks and I'm having all sorts of problems.

If you want to replace the bubble tank, get one for the late model V8 as it doesn't have the level sensor, and hence doesn't get the same leaks.

That is exactly whats wrong with mine Peter. So leaking out of that sensor area will cause problems will it? If so I'll get a replacement quick fast.

Not a real problem, usually just means a slow leak and then the coolant looks ugly as it gets sprayed around the place. You might also look for a non-leaking second hand one, as new they are around $300.
