Had this problem for a while now. When you slam the acceleration all the way down so that kick down is activated, the engine revs really high and then it feels that it just cant switch the gears, during this process revs jump up and down from 3000 to redline.. creating this surging feeling... If i let go of the acceleration just abit the gears shift and it goes to next gear and same thing continues for other gears. What i've done: changed fuel pump ecu, fuel pump, fuel filter, tried 2 ecu's (inc MINES), changed oil, oil filter and soo on. Although i havent yet changed the trany oil, could that be a reason? The weird thing is that unless i activate kick down switch so (ie around 90% full throttle) everything works smoothly and gears shift very smoothly... So just wondering if anyone else had a same problem or maybe can help out?

Most likely transmission related. Transmission is dropping in/out between gears rapidly, this might explain the rev fluctuations. Try changing the transmission fluid and use only Toyota Type T-IV.

Yup, sounds like it transmission problems to me. Transmission flush is worth a try but it could be a sign of terminal things on the horizon.

Why not pulling the plug (wires) on the kick down under the throttle and see what it does when you are flat to the floor and manually shift the Auto at say 5800 rpm . Just to see if it not the switch sticking or something stupid like that . I am more so thinking like the other guys here and say it's the Auto , but you got to try what you can before you go pulling that out .

Could even be just low on transmission fluid.

Thanks guys, i just realised that i had a stupidity of putting dextron in before. So gona flush the fluid with ATF type IV and see how that goes.

Yeah definitely should put Type T-IV in there, can't believe even most Toyota dealers say to put Dexron in there.

It's understandable as the dip stick says "Dexron"

Type T-IV replaces Type II. Peter for the TT's Yes Dexron, Type T-IV for the V8's. Apparently Toyota thought T-II means Dexron II, which is why most Dealers reccomend Dexron II for the V8's. But Dexron in the Automatic trans mated to the V8's causes rough shifting and other problems.

Nope TT's in stock form don't like Dexron or at least mine didn't. There is a guide posted up by Neil from rush imports as to which fluid to use with which auto including shift kit and other mods. My TT auto developed a shudder at about 4000rpm with 2/3 throttle with Dex III. |

Put some Lube Guard Platinum into the trans and leave the Dex 3 in there ( It is a converter ) For those of you who want to do a full flush, flush with Dex 3 then put the Platinum in then refill. OR, Full Syn Dex 3 ATF will work. ( I run this in a STOCK box with repetitive 11.+ sec passes ) |

Niel how is it like with daily driving if you do much, as in shift smoothness, then again you must be running a shift kit.
