When I went to put gas in my 91 Soarer the other day, the ring that you put the gas in came off. I pushed it in hard as I could but once I screwed the gas cap back on it comes loose again and the metal piece comes right off... (Its the part where you screw the cap on)

Is this a common problem? and is there any way to fix this? Fumes are spewing out of my car and getting real bad gas mileage.

Thanks again all!

What if you just remove it? Restrictors are no longer required as leaded petrol is not available any more.

Strangely enough it still is a requirement to have the restrictor in there.

Q20. Is a vehicle that is required to meet ADR 37/00 or 37/01 required to be fitted with an Unleaded Fuel Filler Inlet Restrictor?

No. The intention of changes made to the RAWS Evidence Guidelines and registered on 13 September 2006 was to remove requirements for Fuel Filler Inlet Restrictors. This intention was detailed in the explanatory statements for these Guidelines.

From -
http://raws.infrastructure.gov.au/faq_1.htm

Yet the RAWS site says:

Compliance
Once imported and through customs, the vehicle is delivered to the RAW who will inspect to ensure it is of acceptable standard, and if so, comply the vehicle. The most common things done during the compliance process are:

:: Fit an unleaded fuel filler restrictor and Unleaded Fuel label

From - http://www.raws.com.au/ImportPurchase.asp

Have to love government consistency.

My '31 which was imported a bit over 2 years ago doesn't have a restrictor.

Fair enough.

The NCOP's dated Feb 2006 state its required on all cars, but if the RAWS is date Sep 2006 and doesn't require it, maybe the NCOP needs updating.

Plus if I remove it I would be able to screw the cap on and fumes will continue to spew out leading to bad fuel consumption...

Think I will stick with this:
