Hey guys,

I need to do a coolant change on the soarer (I've picked up some toyota red coolant).

Just want to know if someone could tell me the correct procedure for changing the coolant on the 1UZ soarer - last time I did it I had massive air locks and I don't want that happening again :-(

Cheers guys.

Be sure to reverse flush and also flush the heater core to get rid of all the old coolant incase it's a different type of coolant than Toyota Long Life, as they may react if mixed.

Hey boris. Flushing heater - leave radiator drain plug open and run car for a few mins with heater on? But what do you mean by reverse flush?

Cheers!

well the manual says dont leave the drain plug open when bleeding the system. the system will bleed itself. drain all coolant from the system. add new coolant. close all drain plugs and run heater on full and rev the car at 2000rpm till warmed up. let it cool down, then top up the reservoir. then run the car with heater on full and rev to 2000rpm. do this till no more fluid can go in.

Reverse flush - You force water the opposite way that it normally flows, so remove thermostat and you would normally use a flushing gun, but at home you'll use a hose and then flush the system to get all the old coolant out for a while.

Good idea will be to replace the thermostat while your at it.

Many people suggest angling the car on an incline so the radiator is at the highest point, allowing air to bleed out by running the car with the cap off, whether this actually works I don't know.

Who knows, but if you're going to do this, get some duct tape and a cut bottle of coke and tape the bottle upside down with the cut side upwards on the radiator. Fill the coke bottle with rad fluid. Then you can jab the throttle and watch the bubbles rise out of the bottle.

It seemed to work pretty well when i did it that way. But in normal operation if the car doesn't have an air lock - the pressure increases and decreases will cause the fluid to go into, and then back out of the radiator overflow. Hence also any air that gets pushed out, will only be replaced by fluid.

Its important to use the engine coolant filler (the plug by the thermostat)as its the highest point on the engine were all the air collects.
use only distilled water in the mix.

Have never understood how duct taping a funnel to the filler and filling it with water can get rid of air locks that are say in the head. They say it raises the highest point meaning bubbles will go to the highest point but they wont if they are already at another higher point (say somewhere in the head), they would just stay there regardless how tall you make your funnel at the radiator

Trick didn't work for me after many times having tried it, after about 2 months of driving the airlocks were out
