I have a leak at the power steering boot and the oil that drips out does not look like the red power steering oil in the pump. Is there a different compartment in these power steering racks that takes different oil or is the oil just old and thick? Can anyone explain as if I remove the boots and replace them I will loose this oil and want to know the replacement procedure. Thanks heaps John

The seal on the rack ends have gone and thats why they are leaking.

You will have to drain the fluid out before replacing the seals.

You have to flush/replace the oil when renewing anything in a steering rack anyway.

Why not do the steering rack bushes at the same time the reck is out.

Hi Scott, Thanks for the input. Is there a guide out there anywhere as to the procedure for replacing the seals. I just replaced the steering rack bushes when I did the control arm bushes recently. Any further hints on changing the seals would be appreciated. Any special tools needed? Which seals should I order? Thanks again. Cheers John

You will find the how to do in the tutorials on the forums main page. It should also list the seal and bearing numbers that you'll have to get.

When you buy the seals form Toyota, it's a full set. You'll need to buy the bearing else where and it's like $10 or less. The seal replacement job is not for the average person I must say. I did it with my dad (we are not that bad with mechanics). Some parts are very hard to get off and you’ll need to be very careful. Need some good tools.

Good luck.

Hi guys, Thanks for the advice. I looked on the Planet soarer forum and found the power steering pump overhaul tutorial, very good but my problem doesn't seem to the the pump, no leaks there, but the rack seals and they don't seem to be discussed on the forum? Am I missing something? Wondering if anyone has had the phenomena of dirty oil dripping out of the rack, not the pump, when there is clean oil in the pump? Thanks John

Did you check the boot itself to see if it's the grease that is in the boot is leaking out sometime when grease is in too long it will loose it's body & liquify.

Hi Jamie, If it is grease, is the grease necessary or can I just clean it out? or do I need to replace it? I was cleaning the boots on the outside when the leak started so maybe you are right but why put grease in there? I am not in Australia at the moment so am just preparing to address the problem when I get back home. Cheers John

most boot kits come with a tube of grease in it to keep the part it's protecting lubricate. if it's leaking out then the boot is torn & need replacing had the same issue with my car.

this.

Although it sounds like you've listened to it anyway. Chances of the steering boot breaking down and dropping grease is far more likely in my experience with cars. The boots are generic and can be gotten from any repco etc. Just cut the hole to size and often they give zipties with the boot. Sometimes they give you those annoying metal clips, they're better but they're damn hard to use without the little winder tool.

anyway good luck
