Bearings, brushes maybe a rectifier should be around $200, ring around, I had mine reconditioned in Rockingham where it failed the battery would not have got me home so I had no choice.

Thanks guys.
Dave - I'm guessing by the name of the place and the cost, that it includes them pulling the alternator out, reconditioning and then putting it back in?

Ah yeah, that's not a bad price... it's right in the middle of what I've been quoted around Perth ($200-$300). I've decided to go with getting one from a wrecker and my mechanic is going to put it in for me Thursday - works out a bit cheaper and much easier for me...

I guess if you had an alternator that wasn't performing up to scratch - faulty regulator or whatever - it could place extra load on the engine and slow you down a bit? But you're likely to notice other problems before any power loss.

Having had an alternator fail before, I was after something to monitor its condition. Jaycar have a new product, a digital voltmeter which plugs into the cigarette light socket, and displays the voltage to 1 decimal place on a nice big display. Only $19.95! It's Catalogue number is QP2220 http://www.jaycar.com.au/products_uploaded/product_14814.jpg

If the failure is caused by leaking P/S pump, that meter probably won't help much.
Probably anything short of fitting a shield above the alternator to keep P/S fluid out of it won't help much either. I realise it's not a panacea, but my point is that if you have a voltmeter, you will at least get a baseline view of the normal performance of your charging system. Armed with this knowledge, you may pick up on an abnormality before it becomes an issue which leaves you on the side of the road somewhere.
