Hi everyone. I am very new to this site and have had a Soarer for a few months now (awesome car!)

I know this topic has been covered many times but I am looking to change catback exhaust similar to Peter N and what others have written about. Not sure if to include small hot dogs to cut out drone and then to rear mufflers.

The exhaust place is offering supercat mufflers which I know nothing about. The forums I have read talk more about Lukey ultraflows.

I suppose I can always put the hot dogs in if too noisy or droney. Appreciate any help/suggestions

Peter N, from memory, runs Rush extractors into 2 highflow cats, then 2.5 inch all the way to lukeys(i think). no y or x pipe. thats a pretty loud system..so hotdogs might be on the cards

No extractors or X pipe. It would be barely legal from my own SPL tests.

Thanks for your help everyone. I did manage to get in contact with Traff here in SA who I met last week when I heard his car in a carpark but I wasn't exactly sure what he had done.

He has since clarified and I am booked into the same exhaust place so all good.

He stalked me. Chased me across the Parade (on foot!) and confronted me in the car park! He wouldn't even let the poor old lady parked next to me reverse out of her parking space. FANATIC!

Yeah I've got an exhaust. Go 2.5inch if you plan on putting headers on it. I've got Rush headers into a 2.25inch exhaust, and has restricted the system somewhat.

Really if you plan on putting headers on, get the whole system done at the same time. Anyway I've got Rush headers, into 2 highflow cats, an x pipe, 2x hotdogs and 2 straight through mufflers.
I'll upgrade this system one day to 2.5inch.

I dont know about knocking out the sound deadening Ali but I have seen someone take off a stock muffler, cut out a square hole on the top (so nobody sees once its back on the car), take a blowtorch to some of the innards of the muffler then weld it up at put it back on.
Is highly illegal but does the job for some people.

Just remove the front and middle mufflers and leave the rears. Simple job for a bit more noise.

Why is this highly illegal.

You don't have to have any mufflers at all, you can modify them or replace them with aftermarket ones. The only requriment is that the noise level is below a certain level at a certain RPM.

What Peter said above will do it for the sound and slightly more power (ever so slightly)
Before you start with the exhaust sit back and think about what future mods you are going to do
Eg; forced induction ETC.
then get you exhaust done to suit that
other wise you will be doing it again later like James has said above.
When you mod the car try to do it once ...so ask a heap of questions before starting.
N/A motor twin 2" free flowing is heaps big enough
to much bigger and you actually loose power to the top end of the rev range
m90 s/c a 2 1/4"
larger s/c 2 1/2"
these are all twin systems as well.

I have a pair of Lukeys hanging off mine. It's only been replaced from the centre flange back, so those middle muffs are gone. In my opinion it sounds real beasty but still pretty quiet. The half-system came off the blue 92 UZZ31 Nathan Cryer was wrecking and I think I paid about $120 for it - so I'm stoked. Had to cut it into three pieces to fit it in the Soarer's boot, so there was a good opportunity to christen my old man's new little gasless MIG.

I love the over run when you come off the freeway and knock it back into second...

Yeah Traff is right. I did chase him across the road because I had not heard a V8 with a decent exhaust so that was my chance. Despite realising how unfit I was by chasing him on foot, he gave me some good advice and I did get the exhaust fitted yesterday. I am very impressed with the note as well as the service from Peter at Exhaust Plus at Stepney.

Thanks everyone for their input and advice

Boris ;
Yer mate it is very close to 2"
But you have to remember one important thing an engine needs a certain amount of back pressure
You will notice this when you go from a stock system to a twin 2 1/2" system the 2 1/2" system moves the power curve higher in the rev range.
So doing this it is a little more slower off the line.

Well actually exhaust gas velocity is what is required, backpressure is unwanted, but it's what you get when you try to maintain higher exhaust gas velocity (with a smaller pipe).

Haven't done any experimentation with the 1uz engines, but I've seen some cases on small N/A engines (2.0L Honda K20), where going from stock 2" or so to 2.5" increased power everywhere, then increasing it to 3" gained power everywhere too, was surprised but I guess every engine is different.

I think twin 2.25" is PLENTY for a N/A 1uz, the more important thing is smooth consistent bends to keep the flow stable.

Boris;
what you have said above is exactly what has to be done.
Velocity and back pressure is the jugging act that we all try to get correct.
and what works for one engine doesn't always work for the next.
like every exhaust i make it is the flow ability that is the most important to me.
I see so many exhausts that have a 90 deg bend in them when thay can get away with 2 x 45deg bends slightly seperated.
to me a 90 deg bend is like smashing ya head against a wall
and the 2 45's are like grazing ya cheek on the wall.hahahhahah

And a straight pipe with no bends is like flying through the wall like it's not even there ;)

I have gathered the components for my new exhaust system - Rush ceramic coated standard headers, pair of 2 1/2" s/s hi flo cats (100 cell), s/s Magnaflow 2 1/2" X Pipe, and Lukey 2 1/2" s/s double offset Ultraflows. I am installing headers myself in early August when the Hobbies Workshop opens at work (it has a hoist) and will then get the components connected locally with 2 1/2" mild steel pipe. Press bend on minor bends and mandrels on the couple of bigger curves.
Dynoed last Friday pre-changes at 123.8kw/rw. Will be interested to see what the new system puts out.

Get the aluminium coated Mild steel stuff if you can

Slightly more expensive than Mild steel but the best as it will take way longer to rust, and a LONG time if you also paint it properly.

Mild steel will go rusty with in the first month and start getting holes in it after a couple of years.

Maybe in NZ, but mild steel takes a lot longer than a couple of years to get holes in it if you paint the outside.

There is very little water on the inside for it to rust, lots of heat and also usually a bit of oil/petrol coming out the exhaust.
