I would like to see his face when he is looking for the starter motor and cannot find it, he wont be a happy chappy
The give away will be when he jacks the car up, has a look, turns around and says, "Well theres your problem Mate, your starter motor is missing!"
My Grandmother tried to do the right thing and have my car serviced (100K), by a mobile guy whilst I was overseas. I found the cam timing out a tooth on the crank. Was worth 70rwkw and the cost, well!

Well so much for Lube Mobile's fixed price quote lol.. Mech gets there scratches his head as to where the starter motor is.. makes a few phone calls.. Jacks it up looking all around.. finally says.. i'm going to have to re-quote you.. it's going to take at least 5 hours, minimum $500 plus parts etc..
Ok.. see you later ... rack off Monday i'll tow it to the auto elec's and get them to do it..

Towing it to auto elec's today. For a skilled auto electrician, how long should i expect it to take him? Have also dropped the 'guides' from internet to him so he knows what's involved. I would assume it would be less than the 6 hours it takes average Joes like us to do it?

unless you are planning to do most of this work again at some point
But the two area's are mutually exclusive.
You can replace the starter motor without having to take off any of the bits you need to remove to change the timing belt/bearings, and vice versa (ignoring plastic intake piping and plastic engine covers).
Plus it turns a $5 job into an $800+ job.
Unless of course you can't afford a 2nd lot of downtime, or were going to replace them anyway, etc.

auto elec says it took him 7.5 hours to do the job.. Normally would charge $800 But only charged me $550.. i wonder what the next thing to go wrong will be... ??
