So it seems my starter motor has died..according to RAA
And i'm going to have to replace it, but my question is, is there anything else i'll need to get to that like gaskets etc? does anyone know if there's a walk through of any of the hard bits i'll have to do?
Anyone in SA want to help me? :-)
Cheers

There's a few write ups floating around on the net, this one has some good info and pics.
http://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls400/324890-95-ls400-starter-dead-diy-replacement-in-progress.html Be warned though that it will be a PITA job. http://www.lextreme.com/starter.html Just to double check, have you had trouble starting your car for a while or has this happened suddenly?

the only thing i had noticed was the starter motor was cininueing to make a 'whiring' noise after the car had started for a few seconds.
then all of a sudden, it just won't turn over..
turn the key, and all i get is a 'click' from the starter motor area.

lol - be prepared to pay for it then James. Chances are the starter is close to failure at around 19 years and 200odd km's.

It's actually not hard, it's complex but not hard.

No need to replace any gaskets however it's probably worth doing new injector seals.

Make sure you bench test the replacement starter before fitting it....

I have done a couple of these. About 3 hours to tear down and 2 hours to put back together. Make sure you cover the inlet ports when the manifold is off.....

Matt.

Yeah i'm thinking of putting it into the local auto electrician.
He said worst case senario would be $325 for a new one..
Not including removal and fitting etc..
less than i expected for new..

If that's actually a new one that's a great price.

Usually a rebuild from an auto electrician is around that price for regulator, pinion clutch, bushes, bearings.

Labour will cost around the same.

Its not that hard and only requires a basic socket set and some spanners and pliers.

Just takes time and patience. I rebuilt mine myself, parts cost of around $100 plus my time. A lot easier to swallow than $700ish from a shop!

Agreed.

Pretty damn easy job IMO.

What is hard about it?

But it's good people may find it difficult, easy money once I am a qualified Auto sparkie. :-)

Hmmmm, I wonder if I'm a qualified Auto Sparky? That's right I am! Why the hell am I a pilot now?! Ah, I only get dirty when I want to!

Shame your not up here Chris, I'd be more than happy to help. Either way, I'd give it a crack your self.

Other thing i'm thinking is if i do replace it myself, and it's still doing the same thing, i still have to get someone else to do it anyway.. whereas if it's there and they are looking at it, they can test the starter motor on the spot to see if it's faulty etc.
Plus i don't really have the time atm..

Mate, I'd personally do the time consuming stuff yourself. It will probably be the labour to remove and refit the intake manifold that will blow out the cost. If you can do this, and take the starter in, your auto elec can run it on the test bench.

If you do not have the time though, not much choice I guess.

Chris just buy some beer and say your having a bbq, get it done fast then lol. By the way is there anything else in there that would need replacing like knock sensors? and do our V8's have that EGR stuff mentioned in the club lexus post?

Agreed, I'm not an auto anything - I'm a software developer! But I usually manage to bodge my way through stuff like this with my fairly limited skills and tools.

"Complicated" and "time consuming" are two different things. As long as you take careful note when you pull everything apart, and label anything you don't think you can remember, then pulling the inlet manifold off and putting it back on is not complicated, just time consuming.

So i have been recommended to ring a mobile mechanic to fit the replacement starter motor..
So i rang them and told them what needed doing, they have quoted $156 to do the job. (it will only take 1 hour to change over the starter motor)
i asked if that's a firm quote? If it takes longer than 1 hour, i won't be charged extra?
Correct..
Booked it in for Saturday :-)

There is no way you can get to the starter motor in 30 minutes.

If he doesn't walk away when he sees the job and tries to stick to his quote he is going to cut as many corners as possible and try and cut his losses.

Not the sort of job that I would like to have done on my car.

Matt.

Well I hope it works out for you then Chris.

Nathan/Mike - I am also a qualified auto sparky - I have no interest in doing starter/alternator repairs and troubleshooting work as a job. Its no fun, people don't want to pay anything either.

I work in the IT industry for a living but having the auto sparky experience is incredibly helpful.

So do i Matt :-)
if worse comes to worse, then i'll tell them where to go, and take it to the autoelectrician i was going to take it to anyway..
On another note.. Adelaide Jap Dismantlers can go jump..
I went there to get the Starter motor, and they were closed, even though i was there before thier closing time, AND i rang beforehand to let them know, and they said they'd wait for me..
