I have modified and fitted ef fans and au fans onto various things and they should be fine to fit on a soarer.
The only problem is going to be how are you going to bypass the fan oil pump run off the drive belt on the front of the motor. I would suspect if let run dry that would eventually seize.

well what i was thinking was instead of caping off the pump or letting it run dry was to loop the inlet/outlet pipes together thus making a continual circuit and not adding any stress to the pump therefore no damage should occur

1st pic

4.5" fan pump pully

2nd pic

visual comparison between the 1uz and the 2uz.

take the 1uz off and put the 2uz on and stll be able to use the standard size belts etc.

there us supposed to be a fan clutch connected to the 2uz, but there is a pully from toyota that fits straight on. same size, position etc.

The bracket is easy to source as per the link from ebay (there are about a dozen sellers to choose from).

The pulley however is near impossible to get 2nd hand, and doesn't exist aftermarket.

As for getting new genuine from Toyota
Pulley - 16371-50020 - $150 NZD
Bracket - 16307-50010 - $375 NZD
And these are the uber cheap New Zealand sourced prices. Expect 20-50% more from your local Toyota dealer.

Also the hydro fan should never be replaced by electric thermo's. The two systems just don't compare. The hydro fan is VASTLY superior under pretty much all conditions.

You are also looking at about $400+ to convert to EL/AU thermo's (don't use EF), and thats just parts.
Expect a full weekends work in labour (assuming you are doing it yourself), and then don't be surprised when your aircon doesn't work very well in summer traffic (this can be gotten around, but requires more thinking/wiring)

Just so you know i have a spare fan and pump. I don't know how much it would be for postage but PM me if your interested.

And about the thermo fans, EF/AU fans have a shroud so they will work great! If a 5.4L V8 with (Boss models having 315KW) can be cooled sufficiently by these fans then i'm sure a 4L 191KW V8 will be fine, yes i know hydro fans are better fans but with a electric thermo fan you will free up alot of room and remove another component that your engine drives.

Going with AU fans that cost $220 ish brand new from auto shops and an idler pulley you can find off Ebay.com for $26 US, a new belt $40 plus the resales that you might be able to get by selling your hydro setup, it is a pretty cheap option. Its easy to wire up all you have to do is wire the original fan switch to the new thermos.

But really its up to you, if you plan on keeping it stock then just get a 2nd hand hydro setup but if you will need the room for a blower setup or whatever then thermos will work fine.

so that's my 2c

AFAIK one of the EF fans is 6V (or they both are?) so they are not suitable.

EL onwards have two 12V fans.

While adding extra load to your alternator...

Reckon you can link me to one of those?
I spent months looking, and found heaps of places selling the bracket (cheapest was $60US plus $50US post), but no one was selling a pulley.

Don't get me wrong, I love the AU fans (most of cars run them), however, the factory hydro setup is a FAR FAR FAR better system, with the only downside being more complexity.
So unless you need the room for something else, just replace what ever is broken.

Yeh, but it's only abit of load on the alternator for a few seconds at a time. I totally agree that the hydro fan is the better of the 2 but sometimes you just need the extra space.

I remember seeing some for $26 US but that's not including postage, but maybe that was a one off price or was bidding because the cheapest I can find is $50 US.
I'm pretty sure some LS400's have them so you could just try find one in Aus 2nd hand or something.

Here's the link anyway

30amps is not what I'd consider a small load.
And if you hook you aircon pressure switch up to them you'd be very surprised at just how often they run (ie. almost constantly during summer at low speeds)

That link is for the bracket, it doesn't include the pulley.
