My v8 has a popping noise while in idle,it doesn't do it all the time.
Some days its real bad sounds like when a coil has died, other days runs like a dream.
Anyone know what this could be.

Thanks

Is the popping noise from the exhaust or the engine?

When the Cats burn out they can rattle around and block the exhaust till they are replaced.

The popping noise sounds like it coming from the exhaust, bute tends to surge a little which makes me think possibly coming from the engine.
Any info would gratefully be appreciated.

I would also be looking for a VAC leak.

Any history on the vehicle mileage 100K or 200K services been completed, parts been replaced like Distributor Caps Rotor buttons or plugs and leads?
If it is not misfiring or breaking down under load then its unlikely to be any of these. A Vac leak is a good place to start.
